Nina Blackwood Interviews Jerry Garcia for MTV, ca. June 2, 1983

Some classic lines here, like the studio as building a ship in a bottle and playing live like piloting a rowboat in the ocean. I wasn't super careful about getting everything 100% perfect, especially not where there's GD talk. I am not 100% certain about the geolocation, but it's got to be about right.

Don't judge a tape by the gear: JGB at Stages, East St. Louis, May 23, 1983

The only tape circulating for the Garcia Band show at Stages in East St. Louis, May 23, 1983, was recorded using the built-in mics of a Sony D6 by one Steven Shayman. Looks like it entered circulation in June 2004 as a shn fileset put together by Dr. Chris Ladner (neo_levo) as part of the MisSHN in the Rain offshoot of the The Music Never Stopped (TMNSP) project to canonically archive and circulate, well, everything.

I have always loved that tour, and consider 5/31/83 to be an all-time great Garcia Band show. There are lots of great tapes from known tapers using fancy gear, in venues we know and love such as the Cap, from the back end of the tour. The band plays encores the last eight shows of the tour, and eleven of the last twelve -- and not always "Midnight Moonlight", but some killer "Rhapsody In Red"s and other stuff. It's hot.

The early part, by contrast, wobbles a little bit. I know the Saturday Rainbow show in Denver was a late-add and didn't sell out, though I like it pretty well. The next night north of K.C. was canceled for reasons unknown --I presume that ticket sales were just too slow for a room that was much too large-- and the gig at the incredible Shea's Theatre in Buffalo on the 25th gets a "meh" from me, though that may be because the tape is kinda rough.

Anyway, for all of these reasons, I suppose, I have utterly neglected little ol' 5/23/83. And I was wrong to have done so.

The tape is actually quite a delight. It sounds really fresh and nice. Shayman must have found a good spot, and the D6's built-in mics pick everything up. As any taper will tell you, location > gear. There's plenty of the sellout crowd, and everyone seems to be having a great old time. Jerry hadn't played St. Louis outside the GD since 1976, and everyone seems enthused to have hime come through. A review from unidentified publication (Durrwachter 1983) captures the vibe nicely, invoking a happy crowd packed onto the club floor, dancing a vital, lively, tight band. All of that comes through on the tape.

He even looks pretty good!

I don't have a ton of @@wowwowwowwowwows in my notes. I hear some fanny goodness in "Catfish John," a rockin' "Let It Rock," and some of the period's chacracteristic beautiful spirraling guitar figures in both "Harder They Come" and "Dear Prudence". Not a lot of the metallic, hair-on-fire burn here, even in "Deal", at least not that I noted. The show has a cooler, smoother, sweeter vibe than we'd hear after another week-plus on the road. It's just a really nice listen from both a recording and a performance standpoint. Don't make the same mistake I did and leave it neglected for 17 years.

Upon Further Review: Various and Sundry Listening Notes on the Last Night of the Fall '83 Tour: JGB at Wilkins Theatre, Kean College, December 13, 1983

I first heard 12/13/83 in 2003, when Andrew Faintych sent me tapes from both shows recorded with Senn 421s from the 10th row by "Tom from Avon, NJ". In 2005, Bu lent me his DAT of an unattributed aud, and minches and I did our transferring and lossless thing as shnid-31253. shnid-77710 came around in 2006, and I think I listened to it in 2009. shnid-133469 came by in 2015, and I must have listened to it because I have timings, although I have no performance notes. Most recently came 151810 of the late show. It's a sign of my generalized appreciation for this show and tour that I have spun all of these, while countless hundreds of filesets, and probably a dozen or more from this very tour, sit unheard.

Given that weird batch of data, I thought I'd post all my listening notes, and present some extractions, maybe with rough datings, going in performance order. The listening notes comes last, the extractions of comments through the performance are in the middle, and the executive summary comes first.

1. What do we learn from this?

Probably not that much.

I am consistent in timing the blast-off of the early set Deal around 3:45 in, and I also note how it finds an open space at the end which I think is quite uncommon. Now of course I want to listen to the rest of the tour to see. But it's cool and worth checking out.

The late show setlist draws my eye throughout time, but I may well find that the performance doesn't quite live up to it (though my 2009 self raved).

One version of me called the late show "Catfish John" an all-timer, though others didn't bother to make a single note. Similarly, on the most recent listen I found the TUIB pretty compelling, but not so much on earlier listens (to other filesets). 2021 me also raved about the Rhapsody In Red from the Nak 300s, while others did not. The Don't Let Go gets similar notations re the vocal-instrumental doubling around 4 minutes in, and two mes also noted the sweet transition into Mid Moon. 2021 me made the particular note that DLG never returned to the song. On current thinking, that seems exceptionally rare. When did Garcia leave a song unfinished like that outside the Dead? Update: 12/4/83b DLG > Deal segue may be another case, need to double-check if DLG reprises.

2. Note Extractions

2005:  Great setlists (especially the late show), and really terrific performances.  The vocals are a little rough, but there is some sparkling late '83 guitar work here, lots of energy.

Mission In The Rain

2006: the start of MITR is very off sounding. What a weird sounding tape. Where is John Kahn? It's a little cringeworthy for me, as MITR could sometimes be - once he lost the fall 1975 voice with which he originally sang it, it took him years to find an arrangement that really worked - probably not until 1987. I am really enjoying the raindrop notes Garcia's painting on the ceiling of the room, and, 8:20 and a nice note 8:40. Some excellent liquid playing. It's much better to play than sing, sometimes. Melvin stepping up a little bit early 9. I need to check how long this has been instrumental, and how much lyric this covers. Great instrumental break! @ 9:51 "all the things I planned to do I only did halfway ... tomorrow will be Sunday born of rainy Saturday"

 
They Love Each Other

2006: wanna hear what Kemper can do for you? Check out 3:04-3:08 of this TLEO. He just does a great driving run to enthuse Melvin for his feature, which sounds fine. Sounds like his fast hard start to TWLWMYD, but in a totally different context. Great drumming, looking way ahead and navigating the whole band to the '1', everyone gets comfortable.

Simple Twist Of Fate

2006: my God you understand exactly why Garcia loves this song. He is giving this great Dylan a great treatment. Carefully phrasing himself. John takes a lead ca. 6:50. Still leading early 9, Garcia has been playing an ethereal bowing sound behind John, who's still fluttering around until Jerry takes over 9:56. That was maybe a little abrupt on poor ol' John, but Jerry has something to say. John is still doing his lead style through 10:30, so a very nice dual thing from them. Good for John not to take getting cut off lying down, but I, for one, vote that it's Jerry's turn. John had stayed very forward into early 11, by 11:30 he drops back into his normal STOF swing. I think that, overall, this is an excellent STOF.

2006: @ 3:55 this one had been dragging for me a little, then to trigger the frenzy, David Kemper just hammers down the drums and forces Jerry into action. Jerry snaps to a higher level, immediately dialing in some fuzz and juice. That piece right from late 3 over 4 is pretty smokin'. @ 5:13 Jerry writes a nice sentence, everyone is playing well. The drummer is a freaking MONSTER. Band is active but indistinct, perhaps recording or PA issue. Organ big and full in all of the spaces, painting in every contour. Jerry very high to frets 6:20. This Deal goes to a totally unique space 10 min mark, almost letting it breathe ... very rare for JGB to enter this space. They find the '1' and come back 10:50. John Kahn sounds lost, or is just not available. Not sure this is entirely successful, a little strange sounding. Unusual.

2006: TUIB and this whole set, Jerry sounds a little tired to me. Kemper picks up the tempo 1:30ff. Pretty good TUIB.

2021: TUIB is on fiyah, notes flying all over the place, spraying around indiscriminately at moments, but with laser focus at others. Around 9:30 Jerry takes TUIB a little out! Whoa, this is pretty bonkers.

Set 2:

2005: The second set of the late show is maybe just a touch disappointing, but probably only because the setlist raises expectations so much.

Rhapsody In Red

2021: HUGE chordal approach 5ff. The ladies tried to sing the chorus and Garcia just bulldozed, now 5:47 doing that syncopated galloping. Loud. Screaming again 9:34. John sounding strong here, too.

2003: Jerry does some really cool sing-along with his guitar in the 4-minute mark, and the jam over to Midnight Moonlight is pretty nice

2021: DLG nice vocal-guitar doubling 4. Steps out into a mode at 4:53. Man I dug this DLG. Garcia just put his head down and played with total determination for like 8 straight minutes. Melvin did some nice chunky stuff relatively early on, everyone else did their thing, but this version just found Jerry having a lot to say, and saying it. And then, fascinating true segue to Mid Moon - he never did reprise DLG, which is very rare indeed.

Midnight Moonlight

2021: Mid Moon has an extra special galloping quality to signify not just the end of the show, but the end of the tour. I don't know if it's the fastest version ever, but it's done really fast.

Valerie Needs a Bath, 'cause she is GRUNGY: JGB at Keystone Palo Alto, February 26, 1983

I have a stack of listening notes that don't really say much, but I do like to post them just to keep track.

2/26/83: nice tape, good performance, nothing that absolutely slays me, except that "Valerie" absolutely KILLED in this period. I know the esteemed David Minches favors the 3/5/83 version, which I have revisited and do think is very strong. They all are. Otherwise, Jerry sounds pretty ragged vocally, but plays well and does his thing in the South Bay.

A little 10:47ff, but it doesn't get huge.

Segueing Out of Stony Brook: JGB in Pritchard Gym, SUNY Stony Brook, December 4, 1983

Lawn Guy Land, and especially SUNY Stony Brook, stands in the pantheon as one of the ground zero sites of the birth and development of the East Coast Deadhead and, by derivation, of the East Coast Garcia Freak. The Dead played Pritchard Gym on campus very early on, and, as so often happened, the Garcia Band followed, playing it in '77, '80, and, finally, on December 4, 1983.

The fall '83 JGB tour, undertaken largely by bus, bears all the hallmarks of this year in Our Hero's life, a little grungy, previewing the troubles that would become even more marked over the next few years --shorter sets, vocal limitations-- but playing LOUD, raging guitar and generally making up in enthusiasm what it lacked in precision.

His Stony Brook swan song illustrates all of this. Here's the lede from a show review in the campus paper, The Statesman:

In today's world of molded plastic superstars Jerry Garcia is a breath of fresh air. Rick Springfield fans wouldn't appreciate Garcia; he is old, fat and looks like he's just a step away from burning out. A person not familiar with Garcia would be more likely to ask when his last hot meal was, and not for an autograph (Reiss 1983).

The reviewer, who probably didn't stand close to Jerry (where the air was presumably rather unfresh), extols his authenticity, offering very good perspective on this Garcia era: not a picture of health, but making good music.

SUNY Stony Brook Statesman, v27 n37 (December 7, 1983), Alternatives section, p. 1A.

He makes mistakes, but he recovers and even makes up for them with a little extra added something. He hits some vocal clams, but he blasts so loudly on guitar that maybe the fans --buying up all of the 2,200+ tickets, moving over $22k Jerry and Co.'s way, and *very* knowledgeable-- might not hear the next hiccups through their ringing ears. The band works with and around him, but mostly just gets shoved aside by Garcia's overflowing ideas, limitless playing vocabulary, and sheer decibels. The show is very good, and the closing medley, rare (for JGB) true segues of "Don't Let Go" -> "Deal" -> "Tangled Up In Blue", is absolutely outstanding. Every DLG is at least good, most are very good, and a great many are great. It was very well-played in this period, and the crowd, which recognizes it out of the gate, gets treated to a great one this night, which merits a "holy camoley" from me, earns the "monster" designation, and very neatly drops into Deal after a 20 minute journey which feels efficient, packing huge punch every step of the way. The medley is worth the 45 minutes of your ear time, and provides a fitting end to Garcia's illustrious Stony Brook career.

It ain't broken, but it's badly bent.

So good that he earned a rare-for-the-tour night in a hotel bed, at what I am sure is the lovely Holiday Inn in Hauppage.

The show? It's late '83. The sets are getting shorter. The DLG is fucking killer, and the Deal makes up in enthusiasm what it lacks in precision, which summarizes the show as anything else I might say.

The ad is a great illustration that Garcia, alone among the GD guys, systematically refused to leverage his GD ties to sell tickets to his side projects. Here, we see Mickey showing no such reluctance. Of course, by this time Garcia didn't need leverage to sell tickets. He just needed a pulse and a guitar.

! P: overall: two relatively short sets. I have been engaging the 90s a bunch lately, and sets were typically running 60-80 minutes. We aren't into Jerry's Rock Bottom period just yet, IMO, but short sets were a leading indicator. That said, while I didn't note anything particular from set I, the Don't Let Go in set II is outstanding, with all kinds of modal jazzy spacey goodness, and overall, as I say of Deal, the show makes up in enthusiasm what it sometimes lacks in precision.

It's a little sloppy here and there, with Jerry just charging ahead and forcing various and sundry drummers and vocalists to adjust on the fly, but what it lacks in precision it makes up in enthusiasm.

UPDATE: someone on Twitter, I can't recall who, points out that this is very likely to be a mislabel of 1/8/84, and I agree. No ads, no listings, and a setlist very similar to what we know for 1/8/84. I now consider this a phantom gig.

These sets aren't getting any longer: JGB #21a at the Beverly Theatre, October 1, 1983

One of the things that I expect will become possible at some point is to get some relatively valid data on set times across the years. One of the reasons I try to be so precise with my timing notations is that I am going to want to train a machine to parse song, set and show timings from my listening notes. The data will still be noisy and need cleaning, but the basic idea is solid.

Case in point, two ca. 50 minute sets on October 1, 1983 in John Kahn's old 'hood. Nothing offensive, but we are definitely sliding down toward the Minelli Line of 45 minutes. We are on the road to Rock Bottom. It'll be a pretty timeseries graph at some point. In my mind, this also connects to the fact that, as I only recently came to understand, this show, and the shows around it, were makeups for the shows canceled in August, a month which laid Jerry low more than once.

Deadbase said that the August shows were canceled because Jerry had an infected foot. I know from photographic evidence that he was suffering from edema a year later, and by this point edema, or sores, or goodness-knows-what could have been possible. But, heck, maybe he stubbed his toe or stepped on a tack while doing his calesthenics - what do I know? Anyway, him canceling August shows for health reasons definitely holds historical resonance, and then seeing the makeup gigs clocking in a little short -- not the only time Beverly Hills would experience this -- all feels narratively consistent.

A few other quickies while I have the table in front of me. First, some of those August dates are a little sketchy to me. The ads and listings and such were a little all over the map. Check 'em out at Jerrybase if you are so inclined. Second, same goes with 10/4/83. I am not sure about it. Third, more San Diego cancellations. That down was filthy with 'em in the Garciaverse. Fourth, Palomino Station in Riverside strikes me, prima facie, as a potentially interesting dive bar. I don't know anything about it, but it screams downmarket to me. It ain't the Beverly, of that I feel pretty confident.

Anyway, 10/1/83 listening notes: I like the atmospheric aud pull by Joe Pinedo, very ambient and showing off the ragged seams of the pause button and 45 minute tape sides. The show is probably a little below average for the period, or maybe average The Cats is peppy, the Catfish John is awesome, and in TWLWMYD Kemper does some syncopated splashing that resets my pulse. Kemper plays very well throughout. There's no "Don't Let Go" or "Rhapsody In Red", which were pretty much necessary if not sufficient elements of a great '83 Jerry Band show, and the whole thing just never really goes BOOM. But YMMV.

MTV Interview, June 2, 1983

I don't know where this would have taken place, but the date of June 2, 1983 seems right, in between shows at the venerable Roseland Ballroom on 52nd Street and promoter John Scher's main room, the Capitol Theatre in Passaic outside of Philly.

I have gotten direct quotes on the Garcia-on-the-side (GOTS) material, and sketchily paraphrased the GD history and other stuff. The man was just so brimming with energy. Check him out around 7 minutes in to part one, talking about the amazing creativity and peculiar genius of so many Deadheads. Good stuff.

Saturday night, May 28, 1983 at the Cape Cod Coliseum, JGB #15c lays down a characteristically strong show. It doesn't knock my socks off like 5/31/83 does, but is of a piece with its characteristically hot, fluid, dextrous guitar playing from our sweaty hero, over the band's solid groove. Nice tape from a taper I hadn't heard of before, Rudy Huston. Almost $60k gross on 5k tickets in a room that could have held 7,200.

! P: s1t01 HSII great enthusiasm. Hard to pinpoint specific moments, but this is just strong all the way through.

! P: s1t06 RFTR is going a mile a minute. Compare this to the 4/20/94 version I listened to not long ago, which is super sludgy.

! P: s2t01 RIR voice is already a little shot, but late 4 he leverages some extremely thick guitar tone, and starts shredding 5:20 or so, absolutely piling notes on top of each other e.g., 5:40. Man, this is another strong guitar performance from our hero, who is in bad physical shape but playing like a man possessed. Still making really inventive choices 6:30ff, plenty of vision and power.

! P: s2t04 DP also messes up first verse of this one. But some very nice guitar work 8ff, among other places. Huge weaving figures over 9, crowd appreciative, moving up the fretboard 9:20, some stellar guitar work here.

! P: overall: two relatively short sets. I have been engaging the 90s a bunch lately, and sets were typically running 60-80 minutes. We aren't into Jerry's Rock Bottom period just yet, IMO, but short sets were a leading indicator. That said, while I didn't note anything particular from set I, the Don't Let Go in set II is outstanding, with all kinds of modal jazzy spacey goodness, and overall, as I say of Deal, the show makes up in enthusiasm what it sometimes lacks in precision.

My goodness, what a great sounding recording!

Garcia is on fire for the whole first set (all I have heard so far). He sounds amazing. The guitar playing is fluent and fiery, the vocals are lucid and not dreadfully junky-sounding. The whole band sounds good.

Lots of train references in the first set, even for the Grateful Dead.

Swan Song for JGB #15c: Philly, June 5, 1983

I consider 5/31/83 at the Roseland Ballroom to be one of the best Garcia Band shows of the 1980s. Six days later, this band, featuring the great and powerful Greg Errico on drums, would play its final two shows at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. Surprisingly, only two tapes circulate as of mid-2017: an unattributed 1st gen copy of a Nak 300s master, and, now, Dave Peters's pulls of both shows have enter digitalia. Of historical note, as far as I know Jerry Garcia and Greg Errico would never play together again.

What follows are listening notes from the older source from at least a few years back, and then listening notes finished today from the Peters tape. Interesting to compare - they end up hitting a few points identically (6-7 minute range of LIR, circular patterns in TUIB, Errico's power), and are generally quite convergent.

! P: a-t04 LIR is quite good. A 6:25 some interesting patterning, then 6:45 some fanning, over 7, fan to pluck. More fanning early 7. Nice note around 7:28.

! P: a-t05 LITA some lyrics issues to start LITA.

! P: a-t08 RFTR this is a nice period for the song. Errico is much more heavily percussive than Kemper. Not evaluating in any way, just noting the stylistic difference. Errico is a banger.

! P: b-t08 DP is quite good, with some extra vocal effort, some beautiful unhurried guitar work over the 6-minute mark, lovely. Throughout 9 over 10 he is really weaving lots of concentric circles, all the way to a great brief fan 10:32, now feels like he's unwinding the circles, speeding them up late 10, mixing punctuations with circles, some pulls 11:10-11:11. Lovely.

! R: seeder notes: So the story goes: I answered an ad on Craigslist for 500 free Grateful Dead tapes. On picking them up from the taper, I'm also informed he and a friend recorded other bands through the 70's. These were never circulated, and deemed inferior in quality. When I inquired about digitizing his masters, he laughingly obliged. Most of the old Ampex and BASF tapes are in poor shape, several completely off the spool, and many squealing badly. I will be attempting to bake some of them. I will be presenting the ones of superior quality only, out of the initial batch he loaned me. I do believe these shows will be lovingly embraced by the Dime community, and will be shared here exclusively. Zombiwoof to Dime 2017 series.

! P: e-t01 CUTS Philly crowd is singing along enthusiastically. This is a tight version, doesn't go 'round too many times at the end. Good start.

! P: e-t02 TLEO late 2 it's Melvin's turn, but he's inaudible. Up a little more 3:30ff, but he's still pretty low in the mix.

! P: e-t03 LIR is just smoking. Late 6 into 7, boy oh boy can this boy play his guitar. Even more 7:17 just head down and charging, very high in the register late 7.

! P: e-t07 RFTR John sounds great on this.

! R: e-t08 RIR levels come up late 2, but the guitar is pretty buried in the mix. The bass sounds great, by contrast.

! P: e-t08 RIR Jerry sawing 3:20ff, very good molten tone and sensible note choices. Hits the next verse perfectly right at 4. His voice is scratchy-fragile, but he's giving it his all. "I sing the blues | where has it led" (as he sang it) is always a great line. Oh my gosh, late 6 over 7 Garcia is absolutely on fire. Very good RIR, as expected.

! P: l-t02 ITAM Jerry is really feeling it, and the tape does a great job of capturing the crowd responding to him. Nice, nice feeling performance. John has missed a cue or two. @  6:30 one of the ladies goes a turn too many, Jerry circles back to pick her up, all is well. 8:40 ish he is doing some kind of pitch-bending which foreshadows the sustained work in this vein he'd undertake a decade later.

! P: l-t03 CUTS gotta learn how to end it. Like, someone just keep count, define a limit?

! P: l-t07 TUIB great energy on vocals and now guitar 6-min range. Exceptionally long phrases 8+ min mark, over 9 just sailing, and the band sounds great. More Garcia guitar pyrotechnics to close the tour. Nice landing to close.
