Grisman's Garcia obit in Bluegrass Unlimited

Does anyone have a copy of Bluegrass Unlimited from either August 1995 or, more likely, September 1995? One page has a Grisman obit for Garcia. I am not looking for the text, I am looking for scans, because I need the proper page number as well. Thanks!

ISO OAITW paper

I am looking, not quite desperately but maybe with some urgency, for some vintage Old And In The Way paper. Could be an Old And In The Way poster, could be an Old And In The Way handbill.

I am writing Fate Music, with a credible plan to finish the manuscript this calendar year. The above pictures my workspace two homes ago. I had aimed to have every major Garcia aggregation beyond the GD on a frame on the wall in my workspace to inspire me as I write. I have more now than what is shown, and a good many even of the lesser Garcia Band configurations, but the biggest hole is Old & In The Way.

Years back, Wolfgang's Vault had a beatup 5/25/73 poster, black and red, for like $700. I wish now I had pulled the trigger on it. There is not much OAITW paper of any kind - that handbill and poster, the 10/7/73 qua 11/4/74 bus handbill, not sure what else.

Your humble blogger hubly asks you to search your closets, shake the trees, ask your friends, etc. My OCD can't take it, and my Muse demands it.

More spare listening notes, more JGB #12b. I actually like TLEO here (rare), find characteristically strong-for-the-period versions of Sugaree and Tangled Up, enjoy a melodious Simple Twist, pick up some rock-n-roll goodness in Let It Rock, and totally dig the litling beauty of an early Melvin-era Knockin'. Early 80s Knockin's are the best, IMO. Oh yeah, an extremely brisk TWYDTTYD, "about as uptempo as it was ever done", I imagine.

So that's every tune on this truncated recording getting a mention, except for Prudence. In sum, a nice little gig, a random Sunday at the Stone.

update: AF has supplied images of complete cassettes copies of 5/27-28/81 which went up for sale on Ebay but were won by unknown buyers. Here are analog tapes that have never made the jump to 0s and 1s. Let's get tapes like these digitized and circulating!

We Need A Jerry Garcia Interviews Project

Jerry did many hundreds of interviews over the years. He had a lot of interesting things to say about a lot of topics. There are also lots of quotes and so forth that circulate without any proper metadata.

So, we, and by we I mean the community, need a Jerry Garcia interviews project. Collect 'em up in video, audio and text formats, and eventually get everything transcribed to text. Dates, as best as possible. Etc. Run a blog that gathers them up, a la LIA's Deadsources.

I don't have time to do it, myself, but I have plenty to contribute. Someone out there would be game for it. Maybe it's you! Step up to the big leagues of obsessiveness and tackle this project!

Bottom Line Archive

The Bottom Line Archive contains over 1000 shows recorded during the club's 30-year run, from 1974-2004.

Anyone know whether, say, certain guitar hero's 1974 and 1975 gigs might be among these tapes? Asking for a friend.

Cotati Cabaret magazine

Just read that the Cotati Cabaret was doing a magazine (much as its Cotati plaza neighbor, the Inn of the Beginning, had done) in 1979 that was getting a print run of 15k. If anyone has a stash of these somewhere, I would love to consult them.

UCSB '78

Corry has a post on the GD / Warren Zevon / Elvin Bishop / Wahkoo gig at UCSB on July 4, 1978.

I have two followups, a tape beg and a tangential piece of metadata.

First, does anyone have a copy of the Elvin Bishop set, with Jerry sitting in? Apparently there is an aud tape of it.

I caught the soundcheck the day before [i.e., 6/3/78]. As I wandered up to the side gate the band was jamming a long instrumental "Dancin'" riff. They eventually stopped and Bobby & Jerry started playing the melody of an old Harry Belafonte song called "Yellow Bird" on twin slide guitars. (I recognized the tune, having heard it on my parent's records hundreds of times.) Then the band started jamming a riff that at the time I presumed was an instrumental vamp of Feat's "Dixie Chicken" (plausible), which is listed above as Iko (possible), but as it followed another Harry Belafonte song it coulda been "Women Smarter" (probable). The half dozen of us kindred strangers made the mistake of applauding and were chased off.

The writer thinks "Women Smarter" more likely, but I am going to go with Iko Iko, which had entered the Dead's rotation in 1977. That's speculative, caveat emptor.


I don't recall that info being in Deadlists, or if that entered the Deadbase 50 updates, but it should be a bit more firmly on the record than I recall it being.

A list of known soundchecks would be fun to see.
