New-to-The-List from the Examiner, 1970-1972

In addition to the tantalizing May 20-21, 1969 Garcia gigs at the Matrix, the newly-digitized Examiner has yielded a good number of previously unlisted, mostly-midweek Garcia gigs. A little list  from 1970-1972 follows.

update: see also a subsequent list from 1973-end

11/2/70 (Monday): Jerry Garcia / BBHC / Ice / Cleveland Wrecking Company. Harding Theater. Benefit for A Learning Place. I don't know if this would have been NRPS or JGMS; I am listing as JGMS for no particular reason.
! Listing: San Francisco Sunday Examiner and Chronicle Datebook, November 1, 1970, p. 27;
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, November 2, 1970, p. 35.
! seealso: https://jgmf.blogspot.com/2019/11/ca-november-1-2-1970-fragments.html.

1/5/71 (Tuesday): JGMS at Matrix
! listing: San Francisco Examiner, January 5, 1971, p. 24.

2/4/71 (Thursday): JGMS at Matrix
! listing: San Francisco Examiner, February 4, 1971, p. 25.

3/30/71 (Tuesday): NRPS at Matrix. I interpret this as warmup for the east coast tour. BTW, they also played the next night, according to a redacted source, so we can add 3/31/71 (Wednesday), same band and room.
! listing: San Francisco Examiner, March 30, 1971, p. 24.

11/24/71 (Wednesday): JGMS at Keystone Korner. Garcia's first-known gig for Freddie Herrera had happened the night before Thanksgiving the year before with the New Riders. Jerry and Merl reprise the gig on its first anniversary.
! listing: San Francisco Examiner, November 24, 1971, p. 20.

1/18/72 (Tuesday): JGMS at Lion's Share
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, January 18, 1972, p. 21.

3/1/72 (Wednesday): JGMS at Keystone Berkeley (formerly New Monk). I now understand this to be the very first night for the so-named Keystone at the corner of University and Shattuck. It's a fitting indicator of the centrality of Garcia to Freddie's enterprises that he would play this opening night at the old Monk. (See also "Jerry and Freddie, mid-March 1972".)
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, March 1, 1972, p. 33.

6/3/72 (Saturday): JGMS at Keystone Korner
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, June 3, 1972, p. 10.

8/31/72 (Thursday): JGMS at Keystone Berkeley
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, August 31, 1972, p. 31.

12/26/72 (Tuesday): JGMS at Keystone Korner. This one puzzles me, because the KK would have been under Barkan's ownership at this point. Barkan has narrated that he once hosted Jerry and Merl (after he started booking the room on July 7th), but didn't dig the vibe and stuck thereafter with jazz. This could well be that very gig. I still don't know what to make of a listing for JGB at KK four years later, of course ...
! Listing: San Francisco Examiner, December 26, 1972, p. 28.

  1. Great job as ever. The February 4, 1971 date is interesting as I have a John Fahey listing for that evening and the next two nights. As such it would be interesting to check the Examiner for the 5th and 6th. Ross

    1. The Examiner on Feb. 5 lists John Fahey "tonight and tomorrow."

The Examiner has scads of Matrix listings not included in the old Chicken on a Unicycle list, but there seems no easy way to get that updated.

Anyway, Garcia & Saunders seem to have established a regular residency at the Matrix in winter '71, playing there on Jan 5-6, Jan 12-13, Feb 2-4, Feb 8-9, Feb 12-13, and March 2-3. Had it not been for Dead obligations now and then, Garcia might well have never left the premises!

  2. I have been trying to track the new-to-The List Matrix listings for eventual Chicken update. This is primarily a public service announcement for Ross.

The Examiner has been a rich source. My obsessiveness is pushing me to track how well Garcia was advertised, though it's often so redundant with other sources that I am finding it hard to find the motivation. The redundancy is both the pain and the point.

    1. Shall we leave the Matrix updates in your hands? I'd thought about going through the new Matrix listings, but didn't want to duplicate someone else's efforts.

  3. OK, here goes: I compiled most of the Matrix listings in the Examiner. Of course the bands named might not always have played, so this list needs to be cross-checked with the Matrix ads and listings in other papers.
In some months I wrote out the complete Examiner listings, but in others I only noted the bands not already on the Chicken Matrix list, when there were few differences. Pardon typos & changes in format!

    1. 1965 - EXAMINER MATRIX LISTINGS

The Matrix ads each weekend are more reliable than the Examiner's show listings at this point. Some additions to the Chicken list:

6 Oct 65, Wed - "George Cordova" was George Cordoba. Two listings state that he opened on the 6th, not the 5th.
8-10 Oct 65, Fri-Sun - "The Sensational Jefferson Airplane" are also listed on the Charlatans/Cordoba ads.
[10 Oct 65, Sun - Examiner listing has Jean Ball & the Charlatans, but their listings at this point are frequently unreliable or a week out of date.]
13 Oct 65, Wed- - Larry Hankin opened on the 13th, not the 12th, per multiple listings. Multiple ads state "through Oct. 24."
(Elwood article on Oct 15 says Cordoba will also play "a few more nights," and that "Jefferson Aeroplane" will join Hankin on the weekends. Last Cordoba/Hankin ad runs on the 15th.)
17 Oct 65, Sun - Jean Ball, Jim Smith with Hankin (listing; repeated Oct 24)
19 Oct 65, Tue - Jean Ball with Hankin (ad)
22 Oct 65, Fri - Jefferson Airplane with Hankin (ad)
23 Oct 65, Sat - Mystery Trend with Hankin (ad)
24 Oct 65, Sun - last Hankin ad.
26-27 Oct 65, Tue/Wed - Mystery Trend, Jean Ball (ad)
28-30 Oct 65, Thu-Sat - Caco de Velho do Brazil (ad)
31 Oct 65, Sun - Caco de Velho do Brazil, Jean Ball (ad - Examiner listing has Mystery Trend instead of Ball)
5 Nov 65, Fri - Jefferson Airplane, Caco de Velho do Brazil (ad)
7 Nov 65, Sun - Caco de Velho do Brazil, Mystery Trend (listing)
11 Nov 65, Thu - King Pleasure, Jim Young Quartet, Peter Ind (solo jazz bassist) (ads) - King Pleasure through Nov 24.
[Examiner listings repeat this lineup on Nov 14 & 21.]
However, an Elwood article on Nov 17 states that King Pleasure never appeared: "Permits and licenses for the club now seem snarled and unattainable; the bill has been postponed."
No more ads or listings until the end of December:
      29 Dec 65 - 1 Jan 66, Wed-Sat - "The Jefferson Airplane is back!" (ads)
      But did they play?

    2. 1966 - EXAMINER MATRIX LISTINGS

This year, bands mostly weren't named in the Examiner's generic Matrix listings (which are often ludicrously incorrect), but in the Matrix ads that ran on Saturdays. A few that aren't on the Chicken list, from the ads:

26 Feb 66, Sat - PH Phactor Jug Band "this weekend"
2 Apr 66, Sat - Sopwith Camel ("three shows nightly"), Don Garrett, Robert Baker
9 Apr 66, Sat - Wildflower, Don Garrett ("white country blues"), Robert Baker ("far out comic")
16 Apr 66, Sat - Charlatans, Don Garrett
30 Apr 66, Sat - Sopwith Camel, Don Garrett
[1 May 66, Sun - "Lightning Hopkins closes tonight." - In the listings; probably an error.]
7 May 66, Sat - Sopwith Camel, Don Garrett
8 May 66, Sun - "Sopwith Camel closes today."
      10 May 66, Sat - Wildflower, Don Garrett ("opening a two-week engagement" - listing)
      14-15 May 66, Sat/Sun - ditto; also ad
[After their run stopped, the Examiner's generic Matrix listing included Wildflower & Don Garrett on May 22, May 29, June 5, June 12, June 19 & June 26!]
21 May 66, Sat - Jay Walkers (ad)
      28 May 66, Sat - Wildflower (ad)
4 June 66, Sat - Great Society, Solomon ("international guitarist") "opening tonight for a six-night engagement"
[Country Joe played the Matrix in mid-July to the 17th; but the Examiner continued listing him on July 24 & 31.]
30-31 July 66, Sat/Sun - Tom Northcott Trio (both ad & listing) - mistaken holdover from the week before?
      13-14 Aug 66, Sat/Sun - Little Walter (both ad & listing)
      20-21 Aug 66, Sat/Sun - Little Walter (both ad & listing)
[The Wildflower had a run in late August to the 28th; but the Examiner continued listing them on Sept 4, 11, 18, 25, Oct 2 & 9 - "through tonight!"]
7 Sep 66, Wed - Larry Hankin (comedian) joins Blues Project
25 Oct 66, Tue - Jefferson Airplane & Jazz Ensemble "opening tonight"
(Elwood's review of their show on Thursday Oct 27 also mentions comic Robert Baker, but does not mention the Only Alternative.)
11/20/66 Gleason article mentions that Jazz Ensemble "has been appearing at the Matrix."
      2-4 Dec 66, Fri-Sun - Quicksilver Messenger Service (11/29 ad)
But the 11/27/66 listing says, "Mance Lipscomb Friday through next Sunday." (Listing repeated Dec 4) So it might have been Lipscomb Dec 2-4.
6-8 Dec 66, Tue-Thu - Moby Grape, Steve Mann (ad)

    3. 1967

The Matrix stopped running ads; the Examiner had some Matrix listings from Jan-April '67, but these were pretty poor and incomplete - a listing each Sunday would (usually) list the main bands of the coming week, and I didn't spot any big differences from the Chicken list.
No Matrix listings after April '67, except for one notice:
      16 Oct 67 - "Circle Several" (a satirical revue)

      1968 - EXAMINER MATRIX LISTINGS

The Examiner did not list any shows at the Matrix until October, when listings resumed.

5 Oct 68, Sat - "Pure Funk" with Jackson Ford
      8-10 Oct 68, Tue-Thu - Grateful Dead, Elvin Bishop
      11-12 Oct 68, Fri/Sat - Elvin Bishop, Marble Farm
      18-19 Oct 68, Fri/Sat - All Men Joy
      22-26 Oct 68, Tue-Sat - Steve Miller Band w/ Linn County Tue/Wed, Mint Tattoo Fri-Sun.
      29-30 Oct 68, Tue-Thu - Jerry Garcia, Crome Syrcus

      5-9 Nov 68, Tue-Sat - Sea Train w/ Elizabeth Tue-Thu, AB Skhy Fri-Sat
8-9 Nov 68, Fri/Sat - Terry Dolan, Seapower (sic.) [Dolan must have replaced AB Skhy, who were playing at the Avalon]
12-14 Nov 68, Tue-Thu - Santana, Dementia (a satirical comedy troupe - acts confirmed by review)
      15-16 Nov 68, Fri/Sat - David Blue, AB Skhy
      19-21 Nov 68, Tue-Thu - Mother Earth, Linn County
      22-23 Nov 68, Fri/Sat - Mother Earth, Dancing Food & Entertainment
29-30 Nov 68, Fri/Sat - John Fahey, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks

3-5 Dec 68, Tue-Thu - Sandy Bull, Johnny Winter (listed as "Winter")
6-7 Dec 68, Fri/Sat - Sandy Bull, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks
      10-12 Dec 68, Tue-Thu - Mother Earth, Linn County
      17-19 Dec 68, Tue-Thu - Harvey Mandel, Terry Dolan

    4. BUT - these listings are contradicted on many dates by the Matrix's internal lists of accounts in these months, which JGMF has and should be more accurate than any ads or newspaper listings:

    6. (8/6/69 article: "A short time ago the [Matrix] owners happily revealed they had gotten on their financial feet... Then, two days ago, the entire sound system, dozens of irreplaceable tapes, microphones, etc., were stolen.")

No Examiner Matrix listings in August '69. Thereafter the Examiner & Chicken listings mostly match, so I just noted the acts not on the Chicken list:

      9-10 Sep 69, Tue/Wed - Sanpaku, Ice
      30 Sep-2 Oct 69, Tue-Thu - Mendelbaum, Shag
10-11 Oct, Fri/Sat - Canterbury Fair, Jesse Fuller

14-16 Oct, Tue-Thu - Sons of Champlin, Mendelbaum
      17-18 Oct 69, Fri/Sat - Joy of Cooking, Lamb
      21-23 Oct 69, Tue-Thu - Fourth Way, Linn County
      24-25 Oct 69, Fri/Sat - Flamin' Groovies, Canterbury Fair
27 Oct 69, Mon - Jam session with Mendelbaum
      31 Oct-1 Nov 69, Fri/Sat - Shag, Driver
6 Nov 69, Thu - Tarantula (extra day)
      24-26 Nov 69, Mon-Wed - Sanpaku, Mendelbaum
[Actually the Velvet Underground played that week instead of Sanpaku. The Dec. 1 Examiner listed the Velvets & Charlie Cockey on Dec 1-3, which is also debatable.]
      4-6 Dec 69, Thu-Sat - Rhythm Dukes, Axunder
      9-10 Dec 69, Tue/Wed - Deviants, Mandelbaum
11-13 Dec 69, Thu-Sat - Big Joe Williams, Joe Tate Desperate Skiffle Band

19-20 Dec 69, Fri/Sat - Cleveland Wrecking Company, Larry Hankin
22 Dec 69, Mon - Jam session w/ Elvin Bishop Group
      23-24 Dec 69, Tue/Wed - Gemini, Orion
26-27 Dec, Fri/Sat - Sea Train, Jonathan Goodlife

      1970 - The Missing Mondays

The Examiner almost never listed the Monday night jams in early 1970, with a couple exceptions.
But in the spring, they started regularly listing Monday night jams with Jerry Garcia, Howard Wales & friends - listed on April 20, April 27, May 11, May 18, May 25, June 1, June 8, June 15, June 22. (But did Garcia actually show up at all those May dates?)
June 29 has Terry Hagerty with Wales. (Garcia was in Canada.)
The Examiner had few Matrix listings in July '70, and stopped listing Monday jams thereafter, except for these:
Aug 24 - Wales/Garcia (the last Wales appearance)
      Sep 14 - Garcia & friends
      Sep 28 - Vince Guaraldi & friends
      Oct 19, Oct 26 - Garcia/Saunders & friends

I suspect the Monday night jams continued, though, since they're mentioned in a couple later articles:
12/9/70 Elwood, "Acoustical Festival Sound Idea" - says Garcia hosts "invitational rock nights" at the Matrix.
2/7/71 Joel Selvin, "The Matrix Club and the Rise of Rock" - refers to Garcia/Saunders Monday night jam sessions as still ongoing.

    7. 1970 - EXAMINER MATRIX LISTINGS

In early 1970 I just noted what was not on the Chicken list - some of these are alternate performer listings:

      6-7 Jan 70, Tue/Wed - Jerry Miller, Bill Champlin & friends
13 Jan 70, Tue - Steel Mill (w/ Bruce Springsteen), Jonathan Goodlife (Elwood wrote that he was "overwhelmed" by Steel Mill's set & said Boz Scaggs would be absent all week)
      20-21 Jan 70, Tue/Wed - Sea Train
22-24 Jan 70, Thu-Sat - Big Joe Williams, Stuart Little
27-31 Jan 70, Tue-Sat - Boz Scaggs all week "with various supporting acts," Jonathan Goodlife on Fri-Sat

10-11 Feb 70, Tue/Wed - Boz Scaggs (also with Steel Mill on Feb 12-14)
      17-19 Feb 70, Tue-Thu - Robert Savage Group w/ Commander Cody

      25-28 Feb 70, Wed-Sat - Victoria w/ Sandy Bull (confirmed by review)

      3 Mar 70, Tue - Marvin Gardens
9 Mar 70, Mon - jam session with Bill Champlin, Jerry Miller & the Rhythm Dukes
10-14 Mar 70, Tue-Sat - Eric Ericson w/ John Lee Hooker all week

      10-11 July 70, Fri/Sat - Charlie Musselwhite
[No Matrix listings in Examiner for most of July. Most Aug/Sep listings are the same as on Chicken.]

      17-19 Sep 70, Thu-Sat - Jerry Hahn Brotherhood
