Not a ton to report. Kahn sounded absolutely amazing on this tour. Really, all through 1978. I don't know if he changed something, if the sound people just dialed him in especially well, or something else, but the bass was big and fat. Great recording by Mark Severson, full of ambience. Garcia strong.

Apparently young Buzzy had let his union membership lapse, because the Portland Musician's Mutual Association, A.F. of M Local number 99 sent a "Dear Sir and Brother" letter, fraternally hoping that notice of Buzzy's delinquency would give everyone "sufficient opportunity to avoid a repetition of this occurrence in any A.F.M. Local's jurisdiction, which could result in files being filed against" ol' Jer.

! P: s1t02 HTC @ 4:25 KG plays a terrific first lead, while Kahn is rumble-shredding beneath him. This band was so good, and sounded so good, on this tour. Hard to believe they'd only play a couple more shows.

! P: t01 HTC Garcia's guitar work in 5-6 minute range is potent, aggressive, exploratory. Very, very nice.

! R: t01-t02 tracking maybe a bit off. MITR cuts in.

! P: t02 MITR vocals sound OK at this point, relatively speaking. Having had the day before, two of the last three, off seems to have helped. I love the way Jerry is singing MITR here. This song wore well (thematically, if not vocally) as he suffered his travails. And I love the harmony arrangements with Donna Jean and Maria, the one's "white gospel heartiness" with the other's "white  blues sultriness" (Damsker 1978). A little madonna-whore thing going there, but whatever.

! R: t03 TWLWMYD I suspect taper might have stood up, because a minute or two in, the hi-hat is much more present. Or maybe the PA was still settling in. The Damsker review notes the below-GD-par sound quality.

! song: Cats Under The Stars (t08): This is the first time played on this tour. Funny to be "touring behind" (really, because they were catastrophically late, "touring in front of") an album named Cats Under The Stars, and not breaking out the title tune, which I gather Jerry hoped would garner some airplay, until midway through. I suspect they finalized (and possibly began working on!) a serious live arrangement for the song on the off-day (the day before). The two known versions from '77 (11/21 and 12/2) were definitely at the "work in progress" stage.

! setlist: It is impossible to tell from this recording whether HSII and MM, or just MM, or neither, represented an encore. I would guess that MM was the encore, but I can't really tell for sure.

! P: t10 MM sounds to me like JG and BB are not on the same tempo to start, but it could be the boominess of the room and all the ambient clapping. This is a nice energetic version of MM. But Jerry is losing steam at the end.

! R: t10 SQ change, slightly more muffled, @ 3:45. Maybe had to put mics down, or someone stood in front of taper? Opens back up @ 8:02. Straight bad tape cut on the back-end, but by this time it's just as well -- not that much missing, I would guess.

! itinerary: Fly out Wednesday, March 8th (all but Tutt: United #72, DC8, SFO 9:45 a.m., arrive Cleveland 5:05 p.m.; Tutt: United #78, LAX 11:30 a.m. - Cleveland 6:40 p.m.) to start tour in Cleveland on the 9th. Shows 9-10-11-12, Monday 3/13 off. Show Tues. 14th in Boston, another day off, then this show in Philly. Staying at the Hilton, 10th & Packer, "across the street" from the venue (http://goo.gl/maps/NyEhx). This is hardly a downtown location, but it's right across from the gig and probably much better than the next night's digs, at the HoJo's in Clifton, NJ. Levon Helm and His R.C.O. All Stars opened, scheduled to go on at 7 pm, JGB on at 9 with an 11 pm closing. Five shows the three nights following, then home sweet home on TWA #25 on Monday 3/20.

! R: This is a pretty nice waayyy up-front audience recording. Which means that the vocals are a little low, the bass is a little indistinct, but the percussion (drums and piano) is, well, percussive. The guitar is well captured.

! P: Overall, meh. Keith is a little wobbly in set I, I think, and the song selection doesn't knock me out. On its face, only KOHD really draws my eye. The second set has a much more attractive setlist, but IMO the show never achieves liftoff. I was really looking forward to "Let Me Roll It", but it's a shadow of the killer version from 6/18/78. They never played it again, as far as is known. The deep Cats numbers are fine, but you want them to tear your eyeballs out with "Rhapsody In Red" to close the show, and they just never do. Second set setlist > second set performance. Overall performance, again, not great.

! historical: Garcia, Keith and Donna (GD) were working at Club Front on Shakedown Street during the day, gigging with JGB at night. They just booked up a bunch of shows with Freddie Herrera, five out of six nights (7-8, 10-11-12) at his clubs in Palo Alto and Berkeley. This booking (weekend through the week) strikes me as uncommon and possibly noteworthy. Maybe trying to get Keith and Donna some paydays before they shove off?

! R: t02 level flux in 2TE

! P: s1t02 ISTE @ 2:30 Keith does a beautiful little run, but it's fleeting. I see what Buzzy meant when he said that Keith was so heavily percussive ... he's really upfront on this tape. @ 4:28 Jerry is doing some really nice bending, trying some stuff out. Again, around 6:15 KG is playing well. And now 6:30 he is soloing. He feels a little tentative to start, then he moves to higher register and gets a little more fluid. They let things get really, really soft early in the 9-min mark, almost like Jerry is stepping back to let Keith go where he's comfortable, which right now is more delicate picking at the keys, it's soft and, frankly lovely. I don't recall ever hearing them hit this space ... hell, maybe it's just a fucked up tempo problem! They return to the verse around 10-, and it doesn't sound quite together. Again: I think of what BB said about tempo problems, combined with Keith's raw power, have everyone swinging in the breeze a little bit.

! P: s1t03 IANU nice blues, Jerry, playing really nicely to start the song. He probably have started the vocals, but he takes another turn around the dancefloor, gets it together, brings first verse around 1:20. @ 6:55 JG fanning. Doesn't end very successfully. NB had not been played since 12/31/75.

The show is quite hot, IMO. MITR ends in a manic flurry. Tore Up, my notes tell me, is "ridiculous". Jerry is *really* into this Dixie Down. RIR is absolutely fantastic, with some interesting (if cheesy) vocal work by the ladies over the first guitar break and Jerry going absolutely nuts after 5:45 or so. The scratchy blow-vibe of his voice is the only mitigating factor here.

Different tapes, a month apart, very different inferences about the show.

Bullet points.

1. It's amazing that such a tape should come into the light at this late date. There are more tapes in more closets waiting to be listened to!
2. Does anyone know the status of the video tapes that were said to have been made by John Scher at the Cap?
3. Love the tour, love the setlist, some good moments, but the show doesn't light me up the way it should.

! R: seeder notes: This is a mono soundboard recording that is very clean considering the lineage. 

! P: t01 MITR reminds me again of the very distinctive vocals from this tour. They are gackshredded, which of course isn't uncommon for ca. 1978. What's really different is Garcia's phrasings. Think about the care early Dylan took with his phrasings ... this Garcia is in that same conceptual space. Partly, first, it's just managing an otolaryngological system that is getting torn to shreds by blow, among other things. (I am not sure what smoking persian would do to one's throat.) But I'd add a second piece: having just come out of the studio, and just made a record that he felt was his finest, I think he is just in an articulate-the-words kind of space. The vocals on Cats Under the Stars are stellar, and beautifully recorded by Betty in the custom-built space at Club Front. Jerry would only learn later, to his profound pain, that the album would be a commercial failure.

! P: t01 MITR there are some nice pyrotechnics here, but for whatever reason this one doesn't kick me in the crotch. I should try to listen again and see how I feel.

! P: t02 RL Kahn bass solo from about 6:55-9ish

! song: t07 Rhapsody In Red is a special song selection. Listen to Donna Jean and Maria doing their album backing vocals after the 2:30 mark. So clear on this tape. They wouldn't do it very often with this precision, and this is a very good reprsentation of the genre.

! P: t07 Rhapsody In Red: John's run downs at 4:40ff are just ridiculously well-recorded. At 5:30 I want to say "rudimentary, but well-recorded", but then around 5:40 Garcia starts smashing glass with his guitar, up to 6:08. I am supposed to fall over from the fanning he just did, real rock star stuff, but, on this listen, it's doesn't cut me the way smashing glass should.

! historical: allegedly FM broadcast WNEW-FM, but no FM tape has surfaced. This is the only aud I have seen in circulation, though I believe Jim Anderson may have taped. This is the end of a very long day for Garcia. He did an interview with Scott Muni at WNEW in the afternoon/early evening, at which the St. Patrick's Day libations were being passed around. Then an early show, then a late show. Ray Riescher, who provided me with audio copy of the interview, said that Jerry was noticeably drunk at this late show. Note added 12/24/2012: a soundboard tape has now emerged.

! R: Not a great tape. Just about every song clips or cuts in. A number of harsh transitions remain even after cleaning up the worst ones. There is some swirly hiss.The sbd tape is better!

! P: The show is quite hot, IMO. MITR ends in a manic flurry. Tore Up, my notes tell me, is "ridiculous". Jerry is *really* into this Dixie Down. RIR is absolutely fantastic, with some interesting (if cheesy) vocal work by the ladies over the first guitar break and Jerry going absolutely nuts after 5:45 or so. The scratchy blow-vibe of his voice is the only mitigating factor here, IMO.

! song: Russian Lullaby t03 includes bass solo. I am trying to figure out when this came in.

Something told me I wanted to listen to something from the Cats Under the Stars- era sextet of Garcia, Kahn, Buzz Buchanan, Keith and Donna Godchaux, and Maria Muldaur, and I wanted it to be a recording I hadn't made notes on. So, here's what I found: 11/26/77, late show.

This is a pretty subpar performance, IMO. And while I do not endorse the great Jerry Moore's feelings about this late '77 east coast tour, it's never a bad time to see and read what comes off his hand.

I believe I got this scan from Jerry himself, although I can't remember. Anyway, Jerry's "Five Nasty Thoughts" include classics #1 ("The drummer has to go") and #3:

The Garcia Band plays too fucking slow. You can run to the bathroom to piss, buy a magazine, smoke a joint and drink a beer in the lobby, and get back to your seat, all between two notes in one of Garcia's livelier solos.

I do think Jerry is being too harsh, especially on Buzz Buchanan. Looks like the guy had warmup gigs on November 15-16, 1977 at the Keystone, Berkeley (note Tues-Wed night: classic pattern for breaking in a new bandmember; either get off the beaten path, or play a slow night, or both). The GD didn't get back from the east coast until the 7th (TWA 389, scheduled to land @ 3:56 pm), so there wasn't lots of time to rehearse, I'd bet. It's more a band thing than a drummer thing. I think the slow tempos are probably derivative of these "timing" issues, not separate from them.

For this show, looks like John Scher had a pretty good night (though not a sellout): $49,432 gross on 6,912 tickets for the two shows (Billboard, December 10, 1977, p. 48). Sounds like the crowd is having a great time. But it sounds like Jerry and crew are mailing this one in, at least to this listener's ears.

! Recording: This is another strong recording, to go with great pulls by Tom Dalti (shnid-14969) and Claudette Gardel (shnid-92367). (Question for you taper sociologists: is there another show this early, GD or Garcia or anything else for that matter, taped independently by two female tapers? Thank you so much, ladies. Go!) Anyway, Dauby is in the sweet spot, and while we can hear the limits of the cassette medium (some hiss, for example), everything is here.

! Recording: Steve Rolfe: "According to my wife Dauby, two security guys showed up to confront the evil tapers. She smiled and waved to the security guys, who, in turn, smiled and waved back, then went away. Evidently, they were shocked to find two ladies taping. She had a little trouble with rightleft levels, but did a good job considering it was her first solo effort. It is very listenable" (DNC Garcia folder #52714, 12/26/2004).

! Whoever was doing the sound this tour, and again when the JGB went to the Pacific Northwest in November of 1978, had Kahn's bass sound as beautiful in the room as it would ever be. Yes, Kahn is playing very, very well in this period. But the PA sound on it is just fantastic.

! Show: Based on set I, I was proclaiming this a masterpiece. Set II strikes me as considerably weaker. Notice that the first runs to 84 minutes and the second to 47. That set II timing is exceptionally short for a night when there was only one show (i.e., not early and late shows).

! For CD burning, disc break between TNTDODD and Mystery Train.

! s1t03 TLEO taper's neighbor, as if a celebrity, into microphone: "Well, I'd just to like to say that being here ..." [trails off as song starts]. Funny little moment.

! s1t04 KOHD @ 10:55, Kahn actually bangs the frets of his bass, in the midst of a gloriously lilting version of the song. Awesome. If you want to hear John Kahn when he could play the fucking bass, check this (and 3/12/78, and 3/18/78) out.

! s1t06 MITR @ 4:30 Kahn does a really interesting string bend. Neat.

Not a huge amount to say. A show that has been MiA, around which some setlist uncertainty remains. See my overly baroque notes below.

The most noteworthy things about the show are a really nice Catfish John and a monster Don't Let Go.The latter is particularly noteworthy. Not only is it just really good (see notes), but it has a Close Encounters theme. I have posted on some of the Fall '77 JGB rarities; this one now joins the versions from 11/26/77 early show (inside TLEO) and the last show of the tour, December 11, 1977 at Penn State (inside Lonesome And A Long Way From Home). I haven't compared the three versions, but it's a pretty neat little noodle.

Show/Recording: A Saturday night show in a small college gym in the midst of the JGB's reasonably long East coast tour of late 1977 (November 20 - December 11, 1977), this show has barely circulated in any medium (as far as I  know). There are a few missing sets from circulating tapes of the tour, but no other completely AWOL shows. The only editing undertaken here was to smooth some of the many rough tape transitions. No noise reduction or any other changes were made. The 90 minute running time of this recording is clearly indicative of a single cassette. Whether the whole show was taped, or whether the taper just had the one cassette, is unknown.

! Setlist: The Jerry Site listed four songs to start set I, which are absent from this recording: I'll Take A Melody, Mystery Train, Mission In The Rain, and Lonesome And A Long Way From Home. I am about certain LAALWFH is incorrectly placed. There are nine other documented appearances of LAALWFH on this tour, and in all nine it ended the show. I don't really have time to analyze where the other three "missing" songs were showing up on this tour, but I am confident that LAALWFH is misplaced. I am also reasonably confident that Catfish John was probably not the 5th song of set I. CJ was generally a second song of the night, though, as on 11/29/77 (SUNY New Paltz), it could be the second song of a set II. Anyway, when I put all of this together I am deeply suspicious about the four songs identified as missing from the start of the show. I'd bet there was one song before CJ.

! Setlist: The Jerry Site also listed the setbreak as falling beween The Way You Do The Things You Do and Don't Let Go. But there's a setbreak announcement that runs continuously after TNTDODD. So I am pretty persuaded that TNTDODD is the last song of set I. Don't Let Go opened several second sets on the tour, so I am also comfortable calling it the first song of set II here.
! Setlist: Combining all of the above, here's my best guess at a true setlist for this show: --Set I-- [unidentified opener, maybe I'll Take a Melody], Catfish John >> TNTDODD, as on this tape; --Set II-- Don't Let Go, Tore Up, and then maybe Mystery Train, Mission In The Rain, and LAALWFH.

! Recording: this is not a great copy of a not-a-great-but-not-unlistenable recording. There is a fair amount of hiss, distortion, etc. I think things may be running a tad slow. update: this apparently has mp3 in the lineage.

! Recording: s1t01-s1t02: warbling and panning s1t01 and start of s1t02 (Catfish John). It's a little distracting, but it's mercifully short.

! Performance: s1t02 Catfish John is tearing it up in the 8-min mark and the crowd is appropriately appreciative. If only there were a better tape to hear this more clearly! Overall this strikes me as a pretty nice Catfish John.

! Recording: s1t04 Let It Rock fades in on the 2nd or 3rd note.

! Performance: s1t04 LIR @ 7:30 Jerry does some nice fanning

! Recording: s1t06 TNTDODD quick little fade @ 0:33, pretty close to real time (i.e., nothing really missing), just a level anomaly).

! Performance: s2t02 DLG Close Encounters hints @ track 18:30

! Performance: s2t02 DLG the voice-guitar call-response near the end of DLG is fantastic! JG is really exploring lots of possibilities that I have never heard him engage before.
