On Accuracy

The recent June 5th brought out more than a tiny number of people to recognize the Oregon State Penintiery show on the anniversary of its performance -- June 5, 1982 -- rather than on the date given by the old bootleg tape. Because the bootleg was one of the mostly widely held Garcia recordings in the CD era, the spurious date of May 5, 1982 --imagine bootleggers getting something wrong!-- has been persistent and hard to uproot. Bad information crowds out the good even years after the latter has been established with 100-ε% certainty. Certainly the last decade of politics has demonstrated the dark underbelly of the availability heuristic, as the simple (but relentless) repetition of untruth persuades people to believe it. (Note to self: Kahneman 2011, 62, 66, 67).

And it is now 100% established that May 5, 1982 is incorrect, and June 5, 1982 is correct. latter is now the case here. I first established the correct date of June 5th based on the tour itinerary hidden in the GD Archives at UCSC. I learned more in a piece about Steve Stilling, the OSP prisoner who put the Garcia-Kahn event and a number of other notable gigs on. Dick Latvala's Scrapbooks supplied a picture of the event from a local newspaper! Most of this is pinned at Jerrybase, natch. But there is really no doubt about this, beyond the epsilon (ε) I always reserve on metaphysical grounds

So I want to express my appreciation not only for those who are open to updating their beliefs about this sort of thing, but for those who endeavor to use accurate information, even in relatively casual conversation, when it comes to Jerry Garcia's musical life and activities and the rest of the stuff we are passionate about.

Accuracy matters, even in this "hobby" space, this "amateur" space which, Steve Silberman reminded us years back in one of the Taping Compendiums, simply means "lover" or "lover of". I am fully bought-in to Umberto Eco's view that we make lists in a vain attempt to tame infinity in a vain attempt to live forever -- together. Any efforts along these lines should never be described with the pejorative "obsession", IMO. I greatly prefer the label "passion". And why not? We are dying, after all! We've got work to do!

I get that not everyone cares, and I am not going to try to police their usages ... too much. Maybe a nudge, providing the correct information. Maybe an implicit plea for them to use the correct information as much as possible, not because they care, but because I (and lots of us) care. In that specific form of community known as culture, pinning down our past helps us live together in the present and feel just a little calmer about the future, since at least this piece of infinity has been tamed.

Southwest Jerry with the JGB #15b No-Longer-A-Mystery Singers: Mesa and Austin, October 30 - November 1, 1982

LN jg1982-10-30.jgb.all.aud-maurins.120334.flac1644
LN jg1982-11-01.jgb.all.aud-dogman.100575.flac1644

I have recently copped to the fact that I have no idea who the backing vocalists are from October 24, 1982 to November 15, 1982, comprising a swing south to LA and Arizona, east across Texas (Austin and Houston) and to New Orleans, and up the eastern seaboard. It hurts me to have failed you so (thus far!). I will work harder!

update 20211227: they have now been identified

That cleared my brain to be able to post a couple of listening notes from Arizona and Austin. I don't have a lot to report except that, as I have noted before, Greg Errico hits like a linebacker.

Not much noted for the afternoon show on 10/30 in Mesa, AZ,, except noting that he takes about 20 seconds to set the desired tempo for the Midnight Moonlight encore. I did like the JGC attendee recollection that "There was a Halloween costume contest in between the Bobby set and the Jerry set. The winner was dressed in a home-made Magic Mushroom costume and he beat out a guy in a store-bought E.T. costume by crowd affirmation". Ouuccchhhh.

Two Errico highlights on 11/1 at the Austin Opry House: during HTC, around 9 minutes in, he starts banging double-time to get Jerry out of a rut, and it works. Being so forceful here, there's no denying him - fast and loud, and Garcia has to get faster and louder in response. Then, in Deal, Errico just jackhammers for like a minute and a half from 5:30-7, so deep that it has a kind of pacemaker effect on the listener. My heart felt like it wanted to synchonize with what the drummer was doing, leaving me a little lightheaded.

Pretty good stuff, I'd say average shows for this tour with the as-yet unidentified vocalists.

I Have A Confession To Make

I do not know who the JGB backing vocalists were between October 24, 1982 and November 15, 1982

Update: they are now known: Shirley Faulkner and Elisecia Wright.

I have posted many, many times about the early 80s backing vocalists (see Appendix below). Our understanding of who was who, and when, was greatly abetted by the fact that Corry Arnold took notes from the GD Ticket Service ("thank you, and stay in touch"), which also announced Jerry Band shows and tours and sometimes identified personnel. Here's how I currently understand things. This is all catalogued at Corry's "Jerry Garcia Band Personnel 1975-1995" post at LLD, or eventually will be to the extent that he agrees with me.

June 24, 1981 - August 23, 1981: Essra Mohawk and Liz Stires

The starting date of this configuration is not certain (see the discussion here), but overall this seems pretty solid.

September 7, 1981 - June 22, 1982: Liz Stires and Julie Stafford

Intrepid researcher slipnut found some reference to Liz Stires's sister singing on the first gig in this window, but I have shown the picture below to Julie Stafford, and she thinks that is her (left of the picture), and wasn't entirely sure but thought it could indeed have been her first night out.

JGB at Concord Pavilion, 9/7/81

As far as the end of this window, Liz told me that she left the group just before the tour ended, after a gig in Richmond (6/22/82).

June 23, 1982 - June 24, 1982: Julie Stafford

We are fortunate that a review of the 6/23/82 show mentions "the female vocalist", confirming that Julie carried on as the lone backing vocalist, presumably for the last two nights of the tour.

October 24, 1982 - November 15, 1982: unknownShirley Faulkner and Elisecia Wright

At one point, I thought Jacklyn LaBranch and DeeDee Dickerson began here. But Jacklyn has said very clearly that she and DDD started together at the Keystone in January 1983. I had also wondered whether Julie continued through the end of 1982, but she has said she did not.

So, as of now, this is a three-week hole in my personnel knowledge that disconcerts me, on the one hand, but also delights me because we still have mysteries to unravel.

January 13, 1983 - May 20, 1984 (?): DeeDee Dickerson and Jacklyn LaBranch

With Jackie's clear statement that she and DDD began in January '83 at the Keystone, the start of this period seems clear. I used my unreliable ears to pin down the end of this window, noting the very different vocal sounds and stylings between May (DDD) and July/August (Gloria).

update: as of 2024, I still have questions about when DDD ended and Gloria started. There is evidence for both of them in May 1984 ...

July 10, 1984 (?) - April 23, 1995: Jacklyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones

The front end of this period is not entirely certain. I had originally thought Gloria started on 7/28/84, because there were no known electric shows between May (DDD) and then, while at the same time we know Gloria was with the band out east in August, so must have been in the fold for the local gigs in late July and on Jerry's bday. But then in 2018 I discovered previously undocumented Keystone Palo Alto gigs on July 10-11, and it seems extremely likely that these would have been Gloria's first with the band. It is not quite an iron law, but a clear regularity, that the Jerry Band liked to break in new members on off-nights, off the beaten path, or both. A Tuesday-Wednesday down in Palo Alto fits that bill pretty well.

Appendix: Mistakes along the way

10/24/82 with Julie? Apparently not

thought 7/20/83 was Gloria's debut, was wrong | thought 7/21/83 was her second, was wrong

late '83 tour: used to think this was Gloria, then discovered it was DDD

late '83 tour: further confirmation that it was DDD and not GJ

thought Gloria debuted 1/8/84, but I was wrong because 5/19/84: DDD still in the house per a review

thought Gloria debuted on 7/28/84, but 7/10/84 is more likely And May 1984 remains possible!

Music Mountain Is All That

Sometimes the conventional wisdom has it right, and the high esteem in which folks hold the Jerry Garcia Band show from June 16, 1982 at Music Mountain in South Fallsburg, NY illustrates the point. I heard it a few times way back when, and really liked it. Then I revisited it a few days ago for the first time in at least ten years, and I really liked it. It brings great energy. Everything pops. Valerie is young and grungy, inducing her man to shoot his dog just for barking! The "Don't Let Go" is incredible, Garcia just overflowing with ideas. There is a board tape of the first set, but if a complete master sbd tape existed this should be a no-brainer for release. I may not love it as much as I love 5/31/83, but one reasonably could.
Bobby and the Midnites shared the bill, and played second. Lucky for JGB, because apparently it rained cats and dogs during the Midnites set. People had a good time. A number of great-sounding tapes made it out of the venue, but I don't think the Cornell Effect drives the love for this show. Instead, it's just really good.

Which is pretty remarkable, because according to Andy Leonard, who had worked for the Dead, Our Hero wasn't looking so good:
I had never seen a human being that color before in my life. He was the wrong color. I thought he was going to die onstage. It scared the crap out of me (Browne 2015, 296).
These kinds of contrasts happen all the time in the Garciaverse. I have just come to accept that there is no one-to-one relationship between Garcia's health and how he performed on any given night.

On this listen, I spun the John Steinthal tape, put out by the Mouth of the Beast (MOTB) crew via the legendary Barry Glassberg's first gen reel. Nice tape, excellent show.

Oh yeah, one more thing: what an odd tour, really two tours in one. Things began on this night, after three hometown warmup gigs on June 10-11-12. JGB would do 8 shows in 9 nights, though they'd lose Liz Stires before the tour was over. Then, the Garcia-Kahn acoustic duet would take over the back end, for 11 gigs in 8 nights. Jerry must have made a pile of money on this two part electric-acoustic tour!

The three electric shows for which I have data (from Billboard), the first three of the tour, show gross of over a quarter million dollars.
The acoustic shows made less: we have data for five, grossing another $123k (with only two performers drawing pay). So we're talking over $400,000 and maybe a half mil for the jaunt, which would have had Jerry away from his hidey-hole on Hepburn Heights for less than three week. At those rates, Chief Smokin' Moccasin (Scully 1996/2001, 359) could afford plenty of new slippers.

! historical: Bobby and the Midnites also billed, Garcia Band went first. Apparently it rained mightily during Bob's set. Andy Leonard, former GD employee, says Garcia looked horrible: "I had never seen a human being that color before in my life. He was the wrong color. I thought he was going to die onstage. It scared the crap out of me" (Browne 2015, 296). Despite that, this is widely viewed as one of the great Garcia Band shows. and spinning it now (May 2020) after not having heard it in probably ten years, it holds up extremely well. It just packs tons of clear energy, not too grungy/down-and-dirty yet, still some youthful sweetness to Garcia's voice (though that'd be gone before long, and is already on its way out here in Dixie Down), the band very tight. After three hometown warmup gigs on June 10-11-12, here they start an east coast jaunt, 8 shows in 9 nights before the Garcia-Kahn acoustic duet would take over the back end, for 11 gigs in 8 nights. The cross-fade was applied for aesthetics, as the tape pause was very abrupt, and there was actually a musical break.

Kabuki Acoustics

Bill Graham ran the Kabuki Nightclub in Japantown for a few years in the early 1980s, and Garcia played twice, both times acoustic with ol' buddy John Kahn. I am not a huge fan of the Garcia-Kahn acoustic duet, and these shows do nothing to move me from that basic position. Jerry still sounds somewhat youthful in '82, not at all the case two years later. Not much to report either way, though I did like the "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie" from the '82 late show.

BTW - did Garcia (JGJK? JGB?) really play the Warfield on Saturday 8/21/82?

Long Ago and Far Away: JGB at Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, ME, June 20, 1982

LN jg1982-06-20.jgb.all.aud-lamarre.139447.flac2496

Great pull by Doug Lamarre, very good JGB from the strong month of June 1982. Bobby Cochran and Bob Weir from Bobby and the Midnites sit in on the encore, which includes the JGB singleton "Johnny B. Goode".

Jerry sounds quite strong.  Two new tunes stand out. "Valerie" holds some serious heavy-metal appeal, and "Run For The Roses" involves some uncommon wah-pedaling.

Kahn gets two mentions, first for some big pulling at the start of "Mission In The Rain" and, second, neater, for some noodling he is doing at the start of the show. Here is an mp3 of the snippet, which runs about 20 seconds starting from about 0:23 of the first track of this fileset.

The noodle sounded to me like "Blue Moon", but I don't know squat. Nick urges comparison with Ray Brown's bassline on this Oscar Peterson version of Jerome Kern's "Long Ago (And Far Away)". Getting all musicological up in here, he says that "Kahn is playing what sounds like a C, Am, Dm, and G, which in the language of music theory is a I-vi-ii-V progression.  'Blue Moon' is one famous example of this". So I don't feel totally foolish.

Anyway, I would welcome your analyses. It's always fun when Jerome's namesake comes up, and when a Garcia engagement crosses into uncommon deep Americana.

Listening notes below the fold.

Jerry Garcia at the Warfield - August 21, 1982??

What a strange thing this is.

SFC listing for Jerry Garcia at the Warfield, August 21, 1982.

It almost certainly wasn't JGB: that band had last played June 24 out east, and wouldn't play again (in a new configuration) until October 13th.

It was almost certainly planned to be the Garcia/Kahn acoustic duo, two days before they'd play the Kabuki Theater a mile and a half away.

But it almost certainly didn't happen. This is the only whiff of this I have ever seen, and it's just so random ... yet it didn't come from nowhere. Someone in Garcia's orbit called the Chronicle and told them about this. Weird.

I don't know whether to call this is a phantom or a cancellation. Anyone?

Kean College Tour Closer: JGB, November 15, 1982 (Late Show)

jg1982-11-15.jgb.late-1.aud-vita-minches.78008.flac1644

Pretty standard late '82 gig to my ears, not the equal to 11/11/82 late or 11/13/82, IMO. Errico's Gatling Gun start to HTC is awesome.

Three little oddities jump out to my pattern-obsessed brain.

First, no early show tape. Hm. Second ... , both the Vita aud and the soundboard tape are missing the encore. Hm. never mind. Third, all of the newspaper listings, some of the tickets, and the band's in-house itinerary show the venue as De'Angelo Gymnasium, but other tickets, the handbill/poster, and at least one recollection (from someone involved in planning the show) place it in the theatre, as the '80 and '83 shows at the college were. Update: it was moved from the gym to the theatre because of concerns for the court surface.

One of these is not like the others.

No biggy, but contradictions are fun.

Armistice Day Rocker: JGB at Felt Forum, November 11, 1982

JGB #15b played two long, smoking shows for John Scher and the assembled faithful on Thursday, November 11, 1982. Among these faithful was taper Jim Wise, who pulled two beautiful, powerful tapes from the theater inside Madison Square Garden. If forced to choose, I'd recommend the late show to you. Clocking in at 108 minutes of tape, it features a very hot Valerie, and a good Don't Let Go which actually noodles over into Knockin' On Heaven's Door, a rare true segue for the JGB. Garcia's voice is quite shreddy even in the early show, and by Mystery Train in the late show it's pretty well shot, but the playing is excellent throughout.

Both gigs sold out 4,332 at $12.50 a pop, so Scher and Jer and friends grossed over $100k for the night, not bad at all, and well worth it for the fans who caught one of the best Garcia Band shows of 1982.

! historical: Two very long shows - check out the 1 hour 48 minute late show - both with encores, both sellouts, grossing $107,661 for the night.

! P: both shows are exceptionally strong, the whole band playing with tremendous energy. Garcia's vocals are shot, but this is nonetheless a strong candidate for best show of the tour (which I don't claim to know that well) and of the year (contending in that context with the likes of 6/16/82). It's hard for me to identify any standouts, because everything is good. I guess I'd note "Valerie" really coming into its own here - great song, performed with just the right frazzly, coked-out, post-Belushi burn. I'd also note the rare and very good true segue from DLG into Knockin'.

NOT Jacklyn's Debut: JGB at the River Theater, Guerneville, October 24, 1982

UPDATE 20211026: Jackie has clearly stated that she and DeeDee joined the band in January 1983. So, as of now, this is the first show with the late '82 mystery (unidentified) singers backing vocalists Elisecia Wright and Shirley Faulkner.

The man who taped this show has just passed away. RIP, John Anzaldo. This is a nice tape

This is presently understood to be Jacklyn LaBranch's debut with the Garcia Band, along with DeeDee Dickerson, following a brief four-show stint as a quartet (of which I have written up the first and last). Welcome, Ms. Jacklyn! She'd sing with Jerry until the very end, 4/23/95.

Love love love Guerneville and the River Theater. The handbill notes minors welcome, doors open 8:30, drinks 1/2 price until the show starts. D'oh! Since JG might not come on until 11, this might have cost ol' Mark Anthony some coin.

! R: Waaay upfront sound ... vox nearly inaudible, nice in-your-face guitar tone. Very nice listen, IMO, despite some abrupt tape transitions and tight editing. I have smoothed most of the tape transitions. This is a different master than the one that circulates under shnid 74618. That one sounds to be a bit farther back, with more crowd noise but also more vox and high-end. Thanks to John Anzaldo for taping, transferring and sharing, and to Joe B. Jones for help with pitch correction.

! P: The show is perhaps  below average for the period, with Jerry's vocals sounding particularly rough in the second set. It is interesting in a few respects, though. First, there are a few relative rarities. Per TJS, his is the 3rd to last version of RR (11/15/82a, 1/13/83) and the last JGB version of Sitting in Limbo (Garcia/Grisman would revive it on 12/7/91). Perhaps coincidentally, this version of SIL kind of falls apart near the end. Second, this is the first show for Elisecia Wright and Shirley Faulkner. I don't hear them until Let it Rock, and then only a little @ start. They are there on HSII (though they seem to be throwing JG's groove off a little bit, and their singing over the verses suggests that their arrangments have really been worked out). I don't hear them after HSII, but you can't hear them very well. I am not sure if they are turned down, even off-mic, only participating intermittently, or if this has to do with the fact that the tape isn't picking up the PA.

! R: s1t01 Roadrunner level fluctuations.

! R: s1t03 TLEO clips in.

! P: s1t05 Let it Rock reaches some good heights - probably the hightlight of the show. Very, very good.

! P: s1t05-6 LIR > HSII transition is pretty unique, imperfect but interesting.

! R: s2t03 LITA first 0:27 missing from this tape. I patched it in from shnid 74618 with a 1s cross-fade. The level rise @ 0:55 was from the master tape.

! R: s2t04 RFTR clipped in on this tape. I patched the first 0.949s (+ 0.5s crossfade) from shnid-74618. The level rise @ start and drop @ 0:22 was from the master tape.

! R: s2t05 Valerie levels come up at ca. 3-min mark.

! R: s2t06 Deal major brief level rise @ 5:30 (maybe a splice, tape flip?).

A JGB drum solo by Bill Kreutzmann - Cape Cod Coliseum, June 18, 1982

LN jg1982-06-18.jgb.all.aud-craigl.138576.flac1644

For about a minute-twenty in "Don't Let Go," Billy K. solos. It's a little surreal.

I have historically loved this show, but nothing much jumps out at me on this listen.

! R: not a great aud, but totally listenable, good room feel and the whole band pretty nicely balanced over low vocals.

! R: s1t01 HSII cuts in

! P: s1t03 Valerie some awesome, fulsome fanning late 4. Great stuff here late 5 as well. Very, very good.

! P: s1t04 LIR some real filth 3:20 ish. More big stuff 6:41, rock guitar.

! s1t07 (1) JG: inaudible set break announcement

! P: MITR the big extra turn he takes 8ff is very good, and the crowd expresses its appreciation. He is throwing himself lots of little curves here. Wailing 8:54, yeah. Big return to "all the things I plan to do" right over 9. Very energetic minute or two there. Not sure why the ladies don't back him on "there's some satisfaction | in the San Francisco rain" - later they would, and he could probably use the support already.

! P: s2t09 HTC Errico is such a big hitter. Band is bouncing right in the groove, crowd :50ish loves the vocals. This is a very high energy version, lots of good guitar work. I don't think Melvin steps forward enough - all Garcia, all the time.

! P: s2t10 MT I am not a huge fan of this tune, but the energy is pretty undeniable. GE hits *hard*. Melvin steps up for a nice feature 5ff, Garcia wails a huge note 5:53. Man, this thing is really on fire through 6, a mile a minute.

! P: s2t11 TNTDODD I have no idea why people cheer for this song. Because it's a Band song?

! P: s2t12 TUIB 2ff guitar work has been good all night, that was a good run. 3:12 John plonks a big old bass note. Vocals are low in the mix, but this is a nice roomy tape. Big giant note jumps out 4:20 and his next run fires things up even more. 4:48 GE some huge, giant high hat, loud! More loud early 5, the man hits like a linebacker. 5:30 band holds it out for him, Jerry strikes for another run, good interplay. Still cooking late 9. Man, there is some killer playing here, 10 min mark everyone must be banging their heads, the sweat must be flying. Right to 11 the titular reprise between Jerry and the ladies, to a nice close. Excellent version, though I am hard pressed to identify too many specific moments. Just lots of good music.

! s2t12 (2) JG: "See ya later."

Concert Vault

My goodness, I don't really follow what all comes online --or maybe it's new, so effectively I do-- but there is some 1980 and 1982 JGB (and snippets of 4/10/82 Garcia solo acoustic) online at concertvault.com. I need to investigate some of this more.

Here's "Let It Rock" from 6/24/82:

And "Deal" from 7/26/80, Greg Errico on the drums:

Garcia's Early '82 Tax Tour (Counterfactual)

More counterfactual history from a document in the GD Archives (ms332, ser2, box5), though I have seen it through another means as well.

This is a central piece of evidence, along with the Return of Ronnie Tutt tour in late '81 and a few other things, showing that this period marks a real effort to take care of old business. This especially involved disentangling Jerry/JGB and Grateful Dead finances. Though Marin County documents didn't yield any tax liens and such in this period that I could find (unlike 1978), Jerry was definitely having tax and more general money issues around this time, and this tour-that-wasn't, forecast from ca. February 1982, figured centrally in the various planning. (The fact that it didn't happen this way only speaks to the difficulties of taking care of business!)

Bill Cooper Interviews Jerry Garcia, May 1982

Here's a nice companion piece that really resonates with "Bob Coburn Interviews Jerry Garcia, November 8, 1982".

My notes/transcriptions are little sketchy, but here's what jumps out to me.

On Run for the Roses, with some anti-marketing:

I’ve been working on it for quite a long time. I’ve had to squeeze it in amongst and between lots of other projects. It’s been the project with the least [sic] priority of the things I’ve been working on, so I strung out the actual work on it over three years, which creates certain problems.” Does some work, comes back six months later, and thinks critically “I would just as soon do all of this over.” This project is one of those things that’s so far from what I originally started …
...
Select tunes, discarded them, I haven’t been working on it steadily. I’ve been working on it in an extremely fragmentary fashion. But it’s interesting for that, too. It hasn’t worked to the disadvantage of the music. On some levels it’s nice to be able to have the luxury to deal with something over a long period of time because your sense of perspective sometimes improves … So the record is pretty nice. … Because the tracks all come from different times and places … well, actually, they’re all from the same place, pretty much, but … that adds a certain textural variety to it which is, I think, OK. It has quite a range, from things that have an acoustic flavor, to … I have one thing that’s got a big massive horn piece, a big section of highly arranged sort of things. It has a lot of range as far as emotional content as well. To me that’s a nice quality for an album to have.
On John Kahn: "All of the things that you hear of that are called the Jerry Garcia Band are, in reality, the John Kahn and Jerry Garcia Band” … simpatico, “with just enough difference to make it interesting”. That first line echoes something that Corry has said repeatedly - well done!

More on anti-marketing: "I’ll be coming east, and I’ll be promoting the album more or less incidentally, but not … I don’t really do the straight show biz formula, where you put out a record and then do a promotional tour"

Because of the priority of the GD over JG: "my solo career is not my primary thing. The GD is really the thing that I’m primarily involved in. My solo career is kind of like, it has to get what it can get. So, when time and space allow the opportunity, then I go out with whatever’s comfortable."

On the acoustic shows of the period:

I’ll also be doin’ some things that are solo concerts, just me and my friend John Kahn. 0550 I did a couple of them recently on the east coast, one at the Capitol Theatre and one at … [can’t remember the Beacon] the format was that the one at the Capital played all by myself, just me and my acoustic guitar. That’s a little too stark for me. I like the thing of having one other musician, at least. The bass gives me a little bit more room. But I had such a good time, and it’s something I’ve done very little. I’ve never really been a solo performer before. 0640 It’s something that’s exciting for me, and it’s challenging, and it’s also a chance to play around with acoustic guitar, which I’ve been doing at home a lot, but it hasn’t been my primary ... 0655 It’s really quite different from electric guitar, and so this is a chance to push off in that direction

Interesting contrast with how he'd feel about the GD nine years later: The Dead “hasn’t really affected my life in any negative way, to tell you the truth. It’s been really … It doesn’t impinge. I don’t feel in any way fettered or anything." 0955

Why? “Playing is my life. That’s what I want to do. If anything, I would play more. … It’s what I love to do. Personally, I can’t get enough of it.”

Listening notes, with other interesting tidbits, below the fold.
