E72 post 03

4/16/72 impressed me, 4/17/72 impressed me even more. The Dark Star is one for the ages, saying like a hundred or two separate things, but totally hanging together. Caution is another killer version, not quite as pulse-racing raunchy as the earlier ones, but still quite explicit, Pigpen working all night long, the sun rising on his sweating back.

4/21/72 is a dud. I remember liking it on the film, but here it really fell flat for me.

4/24/72 out of the gate with a very good Truckin', high energy out of the gate.

Body ... Bent and Broken

LN jg1994-09-10.jgb.all.aud-vasseur.23791.shn2flac

Man, these late era shows are really changing my understanding of Old Garcia. I have been saying it in these recent posts: his lacks lung-power, his voice is weak, his muscles are atrophied and his wrists are sore. He is prone to forgetting lyrics.

These physical limitations dictate his vocal and instrumental approaches. Vocally, we find clearer enunciation and articulation. He wants to be in key, unlike Dylan, but this is interpreted pretty liberally. The grooves are slower and deeper, but a light swing touch can also work. He can still bop his head and swing his shoulders, even if he can't dig in, ass and hips and all, like he used to with his guitar, with respect to which expressiveness trumps power, and, really, the latter doesn't make much of an appearance through the whole show.

It's deeply flawed stuff, but if you know and love Jerry it's really, really good. The post title is a little dark, but he delivers that line from "The Maker" so amazingly, I just couldn't resist.

Random thoughts from the notes below:

! song: "Johnny Too Bad" and #death: He sings it as "one of these days "gonna hear a voice a say come" is JG, instead of "when you hear". I am certainly parsing too finely, his expressive variations were mostly driven by lips, mouth, lungs and brain, but I like it. "Gonna", as a declarative, penetrates more deeply in a probability sense, while the passive "when" leaves some space for at least momentary human delusion and denial, suspending the certainty of the outcome if only for a flash. For ol' Jer, it's gonna happen, And That Right Quick. And Johnny Too Bad, in my mind's eye, ends more The Lord Of The Flies than The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe: there is, as the song reminds us repeatedly, no rock. Might as well play some reggae.

! song: "That Lucky Old Sun" and #race #musics and Old Garcia: As you might imagine with decrepit Jerry, "Lucky Ol' Sun" offers some real possibilities, and he takes especial advantage on "fuss with my woman | toil with my kids | sweat till I'm wrinkled and grey". As commenter Nick and others have helped me understand, Tin Pan Alley tunes like this derive from jazz but crossed the racial divide, with whites appropriating and deploying black tropes and affectations - not unlike good old rock 'n' roll itself. On the other hand, crossing over is his American birthright, and ol' Gar owns it lovingly, inclusively, the tender vocal delivery full of feeling, the band providing a spare backing for Jerry's gentle drop-sparkle string work. These tunes can really evoke Garcia's painting of himself and John as old Mission Street players, even from the loftier confines of the Warfield balcony or an 8,500 set amphitheatre on a hot Reno evening.

! R: seeder note: "Minimal hiss, more distant sounding than the typical Vasseur Warfield."

! R: lineage: DAE (EAC) and sbe-free SHN encoding by C.Ladner, May '04.

! R: something swishy and wonky about this tape, panning or something out of phase. By the time I am in "The Maker", it is sounding downright good.

! s1t01 HSII starts with "opened my eyes at night" in06-s2t07 stead of "I needed the shelter". He comes back to it for the second verse - attaboy, Jer! 2-3 he has done some very fluent guitar playing, sounds energetic. Melvin steps up to his big swirling-sweeping piece 3:30, Garcia sounds happy to comp 3:45 behind him. Jerry remembers the next verse, 4:40 ish Melvin provides tasty piano accompaniment with a barrelhouse feel, more after 5.

! s1t04 (1) JG: "We have a little technical problem," as things are being pounded. Melvin hits a little piano thing, JG signals RFTR. FF to s2t01.

! P: s2t01 TWYDTTYD right at end of 5 he puts on his Grateful Dead guitar, wahh-ing in a way that was very uncommon for JGB. Long vocal piece with the ladies out front, him emphasizing behind.

! P: s2t02 Maker John is doing some bowing-type stuff at the very start. Overt religiosity. @ 0354 "oh my body is bent and broken" with feeling. Fragile stuff, glorious. Big pitch-bendy stuff 6.

! song: "What A Wonderful World" (s2t03): this is the Sam Cooke ("don't know much about history", etc.).

! P: song: "Johnny Too Bad" (s2t04): second live version (9/1/94). He sings it as "one of these days "gonna hear a voice a say come" is JG, instead of "when you hear". ^P This has lots of interesting pieces, and credit ol Jer for working it, but the band keeps expecting it to end, and he croaks another go-round. The song is quite repetitive, and that's part of what's so compelling but also challenging about it - huis clos. A for effort, lower for execution.

! P: s2t05 DLG nice to see the ambition. He mumbles first verse. Baldwin sets a fine pocket here. 4 very cool little song-voice piece, set to the weak lungs, allowing him to just not strain. 4:20ff some very plucky plucking. Garcia 4:40ff in a bassier tone, keys are right on it, bass has been inaudible. Heading over 5, it has that worried urgency that an earlier tune with Merl, "She's Got Charisma", also provided in spades. It's a game effort, doesn't knock me out on two listens.

! P: s2t06 "That Lucky Old Sun": As you might imagine with decrepit Jerry, "Lucky Ol' Sun" offers some real possibilities, and he takes especial advantage on "fuss with my woman | toil with my kids | sweat till I'm wrinkled and grey". For book, should probably write Tin Pan Alley up here at the end. Sort of a crossover genre in that it seems to have been whites appropriating and deploying black tropes and affectations - not unlike rock 'n' roll. On the other hand, ol' Gar owns this stuff fully, bringing sincere love and tenderness to the vocal delivery, full of feeling, over a spare band arrangement that lets him play his display a little gentle drop-sparkle string work, too. These tunes can really evoke Garcia's painting of himself and John as old Mission Street players, even from the loftier confines of the Warfield balcony or an 8,500 set amphitheatre on a hot Reno evening.

! P: s2t07 MM I love that Jerry loved this song. At this point, he must have had a real Skinnerian involvement with it, since MM = end of show = nicotine = whatever else. Not that he deprived himself before or during, mind you, but the chance to sit down in a comfy chair and unwind, change your sweaty shirt, soundsl ike a nice prospect, too. So the San Franciscan plays Pete Rowan's paen to another city with a Mission, San Antonio, good music. This version delivers nothing special, and September 10, 1994 goes on its merry way.

Northridge Acid Test

What is the state of our knowledge on February 1966 acid test at a Unitarian Church in Northridge, CA?

I still show a gig 2/6/66 at "Northridge Unitarian Church", no notes or references.

And I also show a gig 2/19 at Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on 2/19.

Maybe we have  been discussing somewhere? Seems like I thought I had this pinned down, but I doubt both can be correct.

Anyway, if anyone has the goods please post in comments.

I cannot get this song out of my ear.

The Slickers, "Johnny Too Bad"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Slickers. "The Slickers were a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae group in the late 1960s and early 1970s."

https://www.discogs.com/Slicker-The-Johnny-Too-Bad/master/630180 looks like first release was 1971 on Punch. One of the youtube versions is said 1970, but discogs 1971 as Panther P-01.

Since we have been talking genres and ambiguity, this totally feels like rocksteady to me, but I could never explain to you why. Odds are it came to Garcia (along with "Harder They Come" and "Sitting In Limbo") via the Harder They Come soundtrack, 1972 on Mango Records. But these guys collected a lot of vinyl, and it's not outside the realm of possibility that they had some Jamaican stuff in the Bay Area. Corry could probably say more.

Walking down the road with a pistol in your waist
Johnny you're too bad
Walking down the road with a ratchet in your waist
Johnny you're too bad

One of these days when you hear a voice say come
Where you gonna run to
One of these days when you hear a voice say come
Where you gonna run to

You gonna run to the rock for rescue

E72, post 01

I have been listening to the integral E72, starting from 4/7 and working my way forward. Not obsessing about details, just listening while pedaling. Some random thoughts.

4/7 has a lot of bucking bronco energy, but lacks discipline.

4/8 so much more controlled and effective than the first night. What a great night of entertainment for the crowd.

4/11 There is so much going on in the Truckin -> Drums -> Other One piece, universes of stuff. Each guy seems to have a bag of trick licks that he's throwing out to the rest of them. Amazing group invention, too much really to process.

4/14 The Dark Star -> Sugar Magnolia -> Good Lovin' -> Caution -> Good Lovin' is truly great. The Dark Star goes a thousand places, and Pigpen's earthy, raunchy rap (ca. 15-17 minutes in of the track below) is one for the ages: https://archive.org/details/gd1972-04-14.136980.mtx.dusborne.flac16/gd72-04-14s2t08.flac

4/16 I am on now, first set feels below average. But set II looks very promising.

More Random Thoughts

It's a good way to soak this material in. It might take me all summer to do it, but so far it's been fun, even listening to the tunes I'd normally FF >> .

"Looks Like Rain" has the pedal steel which is nice, but good golly do I hate that song.

The Pigpen numbers are great: bootlegs used to have his putative last album as Bring Me My Shotgun, and Pig's weapon of choice appears both in "Mr. Charlie" ("won't take yo life | won't even take y'limb | just unload my shotgun | take a little skin") and the sweet, charming, "Chinatown Shuffle" ("get yourself a shotgun | a pocket full of shells | and we can while away the time"). I have to think Hunter would have wanted these for the final, never-to-be-made third installment of the Ramblin' Rose trilogy, but Ace and Europe '72 bigfooted it.

I am surprised at how short the Playin's are - less than ten minutes the first few nights of the tour. Since I have never really soaked E72 in, I might only be projecting when I imagine that this will extend over the course of seven weeks on the road.

I see that there was an Other One - El Paso sandwich the first night, but it didn't mark me, and I am looking forward to hearing some more Other One -> cowboy tune sandwiches. There's a moment in 4/14 where Me And My Uncle and Caution are both happening (MAMU never really materializes, you understand), and it makes me wish they had played around more with those sorts of possibilities.

Garciaverse Event Typology

So, the unit of analysis in my basic framework is an "event", defined as GD (musical), JG (musical), or nonmusical. My method can only pick up events assignable to one or several 24-hour-or-less slices of time. So, something that happened May 25 can be picked up as an event, but something that happened "in late May" cannot.

Based on the rich discussion around my Provisional List of Jerry Garcia's Sit-Ins with Other Musicians (JG-GUEST), here's how I currently think of things.
The top layer is the whole Garciaverse.

The second layer is the type of event: GD (musical), JG (musical), or nonmusical. JG is any non-GD musical event.

The third layer is sociological, and it cuts along conceptions of my own regarding what a band is (a standard personnel configuration), and those asymmetric situations in which one is either hosting others or being their guest. By "unnamed" I mean merely that this is a musical event with Garcia in which no-one can "claim" the gig.

On my readers' suggestions, in lieu of "Sit-Ins" (or JG-GUEST), I am being asked to report the entire JG category. If I could color code and that sort of thing, might be helpful.

Old Garcia Running to the Rock for Rescue

LN jg1995-03-05.jgb.all.aud-michaelB-goodbear.79634.flac1644

I listened to the second set, and man did I love it. "Shining Star" isn't may favorite, but the call-and-response with the crowd is nice. Jerry drops on a dime --actually, John first hit the line-- into "Johnny Too Bad", which is very, very good. Wonderful. The return to SS is neat, and readers will know that such true invention and true segueing was very rare in the Garciaverse (as distinct from the GD).

"Don't Let Go" has some issues early on, but the jam is fascinating, including some scowling scrubbing at around 6:20 and a lonely wail at 11:20. I don't know how frequently "Gomorrah" was being played in this period, but it was pretty much *always* special. This one is pretty flawed, but it's a game effort. Midnight Moonlight feels perfectly reasonable.

! historical: The second set may be the best complete set of 1995. If this is damning with faint praise, I will also say there is some music being made. The Shining Star -> Johnny Too Band piece is subime, and this is the best rendering of that song I have heard from this band (also: 9/1/94, 9/10/94, this version, 4/14/95, 4/21/95). I have some sense that these shows weren't selling out as steadily as in previous years - no idea about this particular night.

Seeded 11/2006 by Teddy "GoodBear" Selby. Thanks go out to Dan Sisler for sending me the DATs in 10/2006!

! P: s2t01 (1) early on, woman in the crowd: "Jerry can you hear me? I love you!" I think he heard her. SS Jerry misses the obvious start at 2, then starts off the beat 15 seconds later. D'oh! This is the biggest pitch-bending he'd do, just noodling with a strikingly different attack, like he's coming at them from the top at a 90 degree angle, so it's more percussive, then allowed to bend and echo around. 23 John is the one who starts JTB, with the bass line.

! P: s2t02 Johnny Too Bad Garcia just jumps the line, the ladies do one more round of "Shining Star" as ancient Jerry canters into the reggae groove, hair solid white at this point, running to the rock for rescue (but "there will be no rock"). Donny @ 3 hitting real hard, and he and Jerry are locked in.  The segue back to Shining Star is true. That is some fine, fine, latter-day Garcia making music.

! P: s2t05 DLG requires a little more vocal power than these other ones, it just challenges him more. Donny Baldwin hits, but he doesn't set a pocket like Kemper did. 2 he should have come to a second verse, but I think he just blanks on it, so he steps back and picks some blues. Comes back to mumbling (should be "thunder lightning wind and rain") - he finishes off with "love is buzzing inside my brain". DB still not really setting the pocket that Jerry wants or needs. He remembers "hound dog" verse. 4:36ff he announces the exploratory part, and it's good. Jerry invents lots of neat call-resopnses stuff, but no one really responds. John is pretty absent and ineffectual to my ear. He hangs a huge note at 6:20, scrubs it, scrubs it some more 6:30, very interesting, totally unique to my ears. Lonely wail at 11:20, exploring some very sweet and interesting spaces late 11 a little darker turn, chunka chunka 12:05 back to the structure of DLG.

! P: s2t06 DLG drops right into Gomorrah, almost certainly the only time he ever did this. Jacks up the verse 4:35 ish, but lands on "wife of Lot got turned to salt" and succeeding "because she looked behind me" admonition.

! P: s2t07 Mid Moon disjointed in second half of 3, Garcia off key.

! historical: This is Garcia's third-to-last Garcia Band GOTS gig, and knowing this, and that he'd be dead in three and a half months, naturally biases the llistening experience. Blind randomization of listening would be the way to do it, but who was time to genuflect before the infererence gods? Anyway, it's good to do. Chris Ladner's misSHN comments also informed my listen. I only listened to set II, featuring the 40 minute Shining Star -> Johnny Too Bad -> Don't Let Go medley. It's not great in any conventional sense. Garcia can't sing very powerfully, and his whole body is frail, his wrists are sore. He probably doesn't weigh as much as you'd think, because he's bloated and his muscles have atrophied. He was still diving as of February, whether or not you believe he last-minute canceled the February 10th show from an encounter with a jellyfish, and Bay Area Deadheads of the day harbored some doubts, and diving would be like the only physical activity he'd engage in to confuse his muscles from playing, sitting around, driving around in his day-to-day. He was mostly struggling against an enlarged heart, diabetes, a forty-year several-pack-a-day smoking habit, etc. etc.

! P: Garcia gives the fans an honest's night music, especially in view of the fact (that we only know for sure ex post) that the man is dying. He offers up a tasteful selection of postwar American music. The Garcia Band gave Jerry the chance to play R&B, which the Dead just didn't do. The show opens with TWYDTTYD, the scrappy Great Migration lament "Money Honey" gives the old man a chance to belt a little, while the second set-opening "Shining Star" calls forth the rituals of the Warfield and of the Garcia Band at the end, church is in service, nice and easy call-and-response, Jerry gets the chance to sit back, lovingly play with sound, make some music for the assembled, trusting the band to frame it while he paints. "Don't Let Go" was JGB's "jam vehicle", such as it was. This one shows plenty of verve, nothing really to complain about (except maybe the singing, but I discount very heavily since it's near the end).

! setlist: So: 4 R&B (TWYDTTYD, Money Honey, Shining Star, Don't Let Go); 3 white contemporary Americana (Dylan-Forever Young, Norton Buffalo - Breadbox, Pete Rowan's Midnight Moonlight); 2 Garcia originals: Run For The Roses, Deal; 1 traditional gospel: MSAB; 1 reggae: JTB; 1 other: "That Lucky Old Sun". Written by white guys (Haven Gillespie and Beasley Smith), first done by Frankie Lane, lots of black and white greats did it. Written 1949 - what would we name the musical genre? answer: Tin Pan Alley.

! R: seeder comments:  Highly listenable audience recording with relatively minimal close up chatting.  Rates a 2.4 on the "Hey Dude" index.  Charged first set with beautiful Forever Young with Jerry wailing it out, hard drivin' Money Honey (this is not your teleprompter Jerry).  Second set kicks off with a stellar Shining Star that instead of dying off into a lagging audience chant Jerry keeps Shining Star going with a reggae beat and drops perfectly into "Johnny Too Bad" which drifts right into the self-explanatory Don't Let Go - over 43 minutes of continuous jamming.  Not what you'd expect for the 3rd to last JGB show.

! R: seeder comments: Thanks to Jim Powell for the source CDR. misSHN in the rain, 1/2004.

! P: s2t02 JTB my God, this is just great, so full of feeling. John doing some interesting things 7, Jerry switches gear real fast to DLG.

Anyway, good, clean fun for your twenty-two-and-a-half 1993 dollars.

! historical: I have wrongly neglected post-Brent 1990 JGB, despite having big love for 12/22/90's burning "Let's Spend The Night Together". 11/15/90 is gig four of five at the Wiltern in a six-day span. This whole run would probably reward study, just to see how LA differed (and didn't), but there is no time. I find all-time interesting version of TWYDTTYD here, which is quite a claim. Note the 2x 60-minute set structure. Very nice pacing, content. Folks got their money's worth (contrast: "Bullshit! Bullshit! 5/31/85). Nice to see enterprising Deadheads patching out of speakers --generously run by Bill Graham out to hallways to allow people room to dance with nice fresh sound-- running tape in the bathroom. Some good sound on this!

! R: Patch Info: John Detally's TOA DM1200d -> FLAC (shnid-23774) supplies: How Sweet It Is (complete track), Stop That Train, Deal (5:05 - 7:24), That Lucky Ol' Sun (complete track), Midnight Moonlight (complete track).

! R: seeder note: Thanks to John Almirall for supplying that tape

! R: seeder note: This was made in the bathroom patched out of the speakers

! R: seeder note: This may not be perfect but I think it's still an upgrade

! P: overall, this show has a lot to recommend it. The second set contains, as it struck me in the moment, an all-time version of TWYDTTYD and a top latter-day version of Reuben And CĂ©rise.

! P: s1t08 Deal: I FFd from after HSII to see how he does Deal. Interesting to hear from a sbd perspective.

! P: s2t01 TWYDTTYD this is really great, very far "out there" for this song throughout 7, over 8, very good. All through 8 Kemper is earning his keep, hammering out the floor like pounding out brass. Garcia picks up his pace 9:10 and Kemper is with him. This has to be one of the spaciest versions of this often-played song - check timings.

! song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (s2t02): The rare tune Garcia could do simultaneously with GD and JGB. I don't think I being too partial in saying that the JGB versions stand far superior to the Dead ones, because the organ and the female harmonies and the reggae arrangement all make it beautiful. The Dead version is all angles and elbows, in comparison, IMO, YMMV. This is the last JGB version until 11/12/91. 7:38 Melvin is leaning his ample self down to blast the B3, when Garcia turns to another verse (managing to get to "the sun is setting in western skies", which wasn't always the case). Melvin is light on his feet for a big fella, and rears it back like a horse, letting the vocal go first. Nice. I also like how he pulls it to a close at 9:30, makes it compact.

! P: s2t04 RAC Garcia is right on it vocally - this sounds nicely rehearsed. I think the tempos feel a little squirrely, but he's got the words. He flubbede some lyrics as far as the general public might hear it, but it's pretty remarkable that he gets the whole long narrative in order. http://www.whitegum.com/~acsa/songfile/REUBEN.HTM. Powerful chording, tight ending. Bravo! This is one of my favorite latter-day versions of RAC.

! P: s2t05 Evangeline: I usually dislike this song, but this version is good. Garcia does a lot of great country jukebox descents, very telecasterish.

! P: I have to check my biases so much here. I want to think it sounds terrible, but here in Struggling Man I am finding much to like in this old Jerry. HAGYN didn't end quite right, but they'd worked the arrangement a little to give it a little more of a cabaret feel. Garcia's less aggressive guitar gives him a chance to mix textures, play around more with tempo. He can still do some really nice stuff, e.g., 2:45, playing with some tone even as they miss a mark here and there.

! R: s1t04 some kind of snit @ 0:34

! P: s1t07 there isn't much wrong with this Deal

! P: s2t02 Shining Star 8:25 ff features the note bending that frail-wristed late Jerry implemented. On the one hand, it's a bummer because it reflects the former gunslinger's loss of vitality over the last 20 months of his life. On the other hand, he continues to challenge himself technically, exploring what he's able to do within the confines of his burgeoning physical limitations. Strength, power, brute force volume were the order of the day ten years prior. Even here he can burn on a tune like "Deal" - but these interludes are becoming shorter and shorter. In their stead he explores more delicate and nuanced spaces, plays more with hanging notes and stretching out, breathing deeply, relaxing, more patiently plucking. The old man gets that every note counts, and by stretching them he's pursuing more of that impossibly elusive elixir of life, time itself, time in a note, which is something very close to the life well-lived, for as long as it lasts. By 19-min mark vocalizations are pretty unique with the ladies, Jerry, I thought I heard another baritone in there somewhere? Very fine true segue to Dear Prudence from Shining Star. Excellent work.

! P: s2t02 DP ending may be pretty, but it ain't quite right.

! P: s2t03 LDS is playing pretty well, but it really requires patience of the listener. I am not a huge DB fan, Garcia is straining 7 minute mark a little bit. John says hello. Garcia with some more concrete expression 7:40ff, not bad.

! R: seeder notes: "Thanks to Chuck F. for the awesome seeds."

! P: s1t01 HSII is pretty tight, exceeds my expectations.

! R: s1t02 GOOMLW static @ start

! P: s1t02 GOOMLW great to hear him working some provocative R & B this late in the game.

! P: s1t04 STOF comes in on the second verse - sheesh. John took a long lame feature that didn't work for me.

! P: s1t05 Breadbox good, fine, old man guitar playing.

! song: "Johnny Too Bad" (s1t06): Public debut of this relative obscurity (?) from the Harder They Come soundtrack. Jimmy Cliff released it on his 1989 album, when he crossed Garcia. I'd have to check arrangements, but I'll take the Spinners 1970 original all day long. Also 9/10/94, 3/5/95, 4/14/95, 4/21/95, so a five-timer, probably should be considered a rarity.

! P: s1t06 JTB is a running song,  it's got great self-propulsion.

! P: s1t07 Deal still good energy on the guitar.

! P: s2t02 The Maker: This is one that really benefits from the chiller vibe of the JGB. Garcia could never just gently groove this way with the GD. Now, it may be that he is lost, doesn't remember how to start, or he's just enjoying himself. (Or both.) Big pitch-bending 12 min range.

! P: s2t04 E I am not usually a fan of this, but I like it at this tempo. First performance since 5/2/92.

! P: s2t05 DLG an interesting combination of upbeat, almost New Orleans tempo with a little minor blue on it. Doing some little direct punctuations late 6, to good effect. Very good DLG to 7 minutes in. That was a very good DLG.

! P: s1t01 CUTS muffs first verse, confused all throughout the start, solidifies after a bit.

! P: s2t03 RAC everyone but Deborah Koons loves this tune, but it's striking out of the gate how slow this is. Never heard it like this. Vocals are *brutal*, he can't get anything out. Croaking "painted mandolin" isn't working. Croaking. Extremely repetitive, over long without much new happening.

! P: s2t05 DLG lyrics are a little nonsensical, but he just goes with it.

! P: s2t06 4th St flubs first verse. He just has no oomph to his singing. Here in a long central piece he is doing very well with the lyrics, making up in relative clarity what he lacks in aspiration. Whatever verses he meant to deliver late 5 early 6 didn't come through. "Stand inside my shoes" is well delivered ... "and for just that one moment, I could be you" ... sounds wistful. Nice energy, warts and all.

Never Get Yo Cornbread Made

LN jg1995-01-13.jgb.all.aud-vasseur-ladner.21484.shn2flac

I almost never listen to 1995. I mean to. And then I did. But then, it turns out that I had already listened to the second set of this show, so the novelty factor was reduced by half.

On the flip side, the "study in contrasts" possibilities are wide; in this case, it looks like a November 2015 listen found me, not dissatisfied, but resigned:
I enjoyed this, overall. It was not a ripoff. Jerry's guitar play is fine, if mixed very low. The arrangements are pretty interesting, but the execution suffers without David Kemper in the chair. Garcia is flubbing like 50% of the lyrics, and there are a few moments where he seems completely to lose himself.
On this listen, I find myself appreciating some creative success in "Don't Let Go" and noting that he probably remembers more of the words to 4th Street than I do.

Old Jerry singing "never get yo' cornbread made" just destroys me - a gentler, faux-blacker version of Dylan's "sure got a lot of gall | to be so useless and all" rant in "Visions Of Johanna".

! R: seeder comments: Strong performance of the seldom played (4th performance post-1980) and often cat-called, "Positively 4th Street" which JGB pulls out of the proverbial playlist closet. I can see Jerry sneering when he spouts "what a DRAG it is ..." Sublime final performance of another relative JGB rarity, Lazy Bones.

! R: seeder comments: There were a few millisecond dropouts before the start of a few tracks which were removed using SF6.

! P: s1t02 HSII - Listening in 5/17, when I don't listen to much 1995, I hear the appeal of this stuff for all involved. His guitar lacks power, his voice is way down in the mix, but still functioning.

! P: s2t02 HTC always a litmus test, because it's mostly always there. Il manque son souffle. Flubbing lyrics after singing this tune like 300 times. What are you gonna do? Now going to FF to Don't Let Go about 2 minutes in.

! P: s2t05 DLG there is absolutely nothing wrong with this DLG. It's a creative success. It has all kinds of range, the guitar isn't burning off both my ears with pure power, but the tones are appropriately, at turns, gritty, spacy, driving, etc. Nice chunka-chunnka-ing 10ff, a step closer to DLG theme with little crosscut sawing happening. NB that John hasn't done much that's audible. I sure would love to hear a stage monitor perspective, because I imagine he was just playing for Jerry at this point? I have no complaints with Donny Baldwin's drumming, either.

! P: s2t06 LB: I am expected to love this, and I want to. But, out of the gate I cannot. The guitar approach 3 is interesting, but I am not compelled, it felt a little awkward. @ 6:44 corn bread verse starts off warbly, but he delivers it beautifully, tellingly, knowingly. "Never get yo cornbread made | sleeping in the evening shade". He sings the break, but he's not particularly audible. Same with the next verse: "Lazy bones | talkin' in the shade | how you spect to make a dime that way? | Never make a dime that way" - old, tired Jerry is great on those lines.

! song: "Positively 4th Street" (s2t07): 2/23/80, then 3/1/91, 4/18/93, 4/24/93, 1/13/95. Jerry had to reach up to the top shelf to grab Dylan's snide and splenetic rant - I hadn't been aware when it started that it had become such a rarity. He'd try it again on March 4 and April 15, 1995 - I'd like to check those out (update: done! 3/4, 4/15). Positively 4th Street is one of those that Garcia loved and never gave up on - Tough Mama being a 70s Dylan analog.

! P: s2t07 4th Street: As Chris Ladner notes, this was a breakout after almost two years, and the hometown crowd knows it. It's a little off between guitar and vocals out of the gate, he has just started with some random verse as far as I can tell - very late Dylanesque! The combination of him just singing scraps and the vocals low in the mix --not unrelated-- makes it hard to hear the lyrics, but whatevs. This feels like bonus time with ol' Jer. Flubs next attempt at a verse, late 2. He remembers a lot more of the words than I would.

"Remember that time you pre-gamed it too hard before the show? Then you spent the whole concert with your head down in the stall? If yes, then this tape will be a trip down memory lane .."

So says the great AF in seeding a "For Completists Only" copy of 4/15/90 (heretofore never circulated digital and complete) from the Closet Call.

I stand corrected: it is that bad

The pithy title I gave to a set of 8/24/84 listening notes (s1 only) was "It's not that bad, given how much Persian he was doing."

I stand corrected. Yes, yes it is.

It is *that bad*.

Here are notes on the three consecutive tracks of s2:
! P: s2t01 HTC ... these vocals are about as bad as they would ever be.
! P: s2t02 Sugaree ... the voice is absolutely *gone*. Even I can barely listen to it.
! P: s2t03 DLG these are the worst vocals in the history of Jerry

As of today, I hold that this, 8/24/84 is the worst vocal show in GOTS history. FWIW.

! P: s2t01 HTC this band can play. Can barely aspirate the word "shine". But the mounting guitar buildup in late 2 just sounds stunning, this tape capturing hot and sweaty Garcia guitar at the Stone. From way down deep inside him, since shallower layers were pretty well numbed. More of the same guitar break 4, still playing wonderfully 4:30, charming, fluid guitar work, another go 'round, I think #4, 4:45ff. Left off 9:25, Melvin had been playing for awhile, nothing special. 11 these vocals are about as bad as they would ever be.

! P: s2t02 Sugaree the guitar work is working, but the voice is absolutely *gone*. Even I can barely listen to it.

! P: s2t03 DLG these are the worst vocals in the history of Jerry. Very late 6 Kemper drives Garcia to a savage space, very dark and moody. Kemper is really leading the charge here, and Garcia drops chin to chest and wails a little bit. Kahn walks it into a jazzier space, everyone where he should be.
