! P: MITR the big extra turn he takes 8ff is very good, and the crowd expresses its appreciation. He is throwing himself lots of little curves here. Wailing 8:54, yeah. Big return to "all the things I plan to do" right over 9. Very energetic minute or two there. Not sure why the ladies don't back him on "there's some satisfaction | in the San Francisco rain" - later they would, and he could probably use the support already.

! P: s2t09 HTC Errico is such a big hitter. Band is bouncing right in the groove, crowd :50ish loves the vocals. This is a very high energy version, lots of good guitar work. I don't think Melvin steps forward enough - all Garcia, all the time.

! P: s2t10 MT I am not a huge fan of this tune, but the energy is pretty undeniable. GE hits *hard*. Melvin steps up for a nice feature 5ff, Garcia wails a huge note 5:53. Man, this thing is really on fire through 6, a mile a minute.

! P: s2t11 TNTDODD I have no idea why people cheer for this song. Because it's a Band song?

! P: s2t12 TUIB 2ff guitar work has been good all night, that was a good run. 3:12 John plonks a big old bass note. Vocals are low in the mix, but this is a nice roomy tape. Big giant note jumps out 4:20 and his next run fires things up even more. 4:48 GE some huge, giant high hat, loud! More loud early 5, the man hits like a linebacker. 5:30 band holds it out for him, Jerry strikes for another run, good interplay. Still cooking late 9. Man, there is some killer playing here, 10 min mark everyone must be banging their heads, the sweat must be flying. Right to 11 the titular reprise between Jerry and the ladies, to a nice close. Excellent version, though I am hard pressed to identify too many specific moments. Just lots of good music.

! P: Overall, I don't note much. It's good, but doesn't strike me as especially strong for the tour. Set I clocks in under the Garland/Minelli Line, and Jerry sounds a little out of it vocally. Cats wastes two minutes going round and round while Jerry appears to doze off.

Maria 'Shaking Her Substantial Booty' at Waterbury's 'Decrepit Palace Theater': JGB 11/23/77, Commander aud

I have always had big love for this show. On this listen, the only song that really lights me up is TWLWMYD. (ed.: Blair Jackson points out Mission in the Rain, which is indeed stellar, deep and heartfelt. Good call.) Not sure if that's because I am not in the mood, or this tape doesn't move me the way Jerry Moore's does, or something else. Anyway, not much to report.

Reviewer "Leapin" (see scan) drops some color: "The JGB packed Waterbury's decrepit Palace Theater on the eve of Turkey Day … upon arrival to CT on Wednesday, Mr. Garcia was rather ill, according to several close friends of the attending physician." (That doctor would be in big trouble today, I think.) Leapin makes special repeated mention of Maria Muldaur, who is prone to "shaking her substantial booty", and seems generally to have enjoyed the show.

(http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs/hard-times-new-york-town). It's not perfect. Is Keith playing electric piano at any point here, yes, I believe he is!

! P: s2t01 LIR not a good start. Keith is way out front, and it's not clear that the tempos are where people want them. Jerry finally starts laying out the tempo of the song, Buzzy wisely gets behind him. Why they had the new guy setting the tempos to start, I dunno ... I guess he's the drummer, but whatever it is, they don't have their tempos together to start the song, and many songs on this night and during this period. Keith is so heavily percussive. Garcia takes a solo late 4-minute mark and you can hear him really having to dig in (not necessarily a bad thing!) to be heard over Keith.

I vaguely recall the weather bein' a combination of new snow on top of freezing rain and fog and really poor visibility, just a disaster of a night for travelin', but we didn't wanna miss the show and drove down to New Haven from Waterbury, parked on campus somewhere, and made the hike across campus on foot (slippin' and a slidin') to the gymnasium.  I seem to remember the ice bein' more the problem than the snow (no surprise there).  With 13 names on my ticket stub we all must've come down in one car - maybe 2.

! P: s1t01 HSII I find Jerry's singing to be well articulated on this tour. It's not the 1978 Dylan exaggerations, but he's hitting his hard consonants hard, lots of good 't's and 'f's and 'd's. He's doing a little bit of growling here "open my *eyes* at nigHT" stuff here. Nice strong guitar solo 3:30. Ozzie singing harmony vocals 7-min mark.

! P: s1t03 LIR Ozzie gives a real nice synthesized train effect to set the tone. Nice. Johnny D is a nice drummer, setting the foundation with some hard splashes, Jerry steps right on and starts with the first verse, and takes a strong guitar run late 1-min mark, raunchy rtakinte mark. Late 7 minute mark over 8 Garcia does some ridiculous fanning. He now has the crowd's full attention.

! P: s1t04 STOF meanders, as it tended to. John featuring in the 12-minute range, and I do like his tone this night.

! s1t05 (1) JG: "We're gonna take a short break, we'll be right back."

! s2t01 R: ITALTL, ITATTC clips in, almost nothing missing

! P: s2t02 TUOY does nothing for me

! P: s2t03 RL Ozzie solo late 4-minute mark.

! P: s2t04 HTC some very fine guitar work in the 8-minute mark, Jerry has found a spark, and the crowd is receptive.

! R: s2t04 I think there's a splice about 10 seconds or so after end of HTC, maybe 15. But it's subtle. Otherwise, if this is continuous tape, we should really consider whether this constitutes an encore. I need to check other copies and reviews and such.

! P: s2t05 WIPMM ends with good energy, but it doesn't strike me as equal to the 2/24/80 version.
