JGMS in San Diego 11/18/73 probably rained out

The List has long given Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders at the Aztec Bowl, San Diego State College (I think it was still this C and not a U at the time), November 18, 1973. Because Garcia and Saunders had barely played out of the Bay Area by that time (Ash Grove in LA 5/29-30/73, the Hells Angels show on 9/5/73, John Scher's Passaic Capitol Theatre on 9/6/73), it would have been pretty noteworthy, had it happened.

Like the canceled show at the University of Iowa on 10/20/73, it would have made some logistical sense, dovetailing nicely with Grateful Dead gigging. Also like it (and another early out-of-town show, 2/16/74 in Passaic), however, it appears not to have happened.

Most importantly, despite this being a putative show in a football stadium, I have never seen any eyewitness accounts. Doggie no barkie.

It appears to have rained in San Diego on 11/18/73, less in town than the biblical 4.5" received in the Palomar Mountains, but having just seen S.D. responding to "rain" the last few days, even a half-inch or so may have been enough to scuttle the whole thing. I believe there may have been Aztecs soccer and/or football events planned for the turf, and maybe they didn't want a bunch of rock fans mucking it up.

That makes sense, but the weird thing is that, besides the door listing reproduced above, after a little poking around I have found no mention of the show in either the San Diego Union or, more problematically, in the SDSU Daily Aztec (digitized, albeit with a rather clunky interface, via the University library's digital collections). I do not understand why the show would have been listed in the door published on November 8th, but never mentioned or advertised in the campus paper.

Thoughts about this? Either way, I am about 99% confident that the show never happened, probably one to strike from The List (now, our individually-maintained lists) of Garcia shows.

JGMS February 7-8, 1975: canceled?

The Jerry Site lists JGMS shows for Friday, February 7, 1975 and Saturday, February 8, 1975, based on listing in Hayward Daily Review, 1/31/75, p. 44.

The above are clippings of the Keystone's weekly ads, I don't know from which paper from the San Francisco Sunday Examiner and Chronicle Datebook, which I lovingly refer to as the SFSECDB. The ad beginning with 1/25 indeed shows the JGMS shows, but the next one, starting 2/1/75, has California replacing JGMS on Friday and, tentatively, Butch Whacks doing so on Saturday.

Because we have such great data from so many sources, I haven't started going through and cross-checking various dates against these kinds of sources. It would be time-consuming. But here's an instance in which this little weekly listings, being sequential, reflects the kinds of fine-grained changes that we might find in them. Here's one case, anyway.

I suggest that Listings for this date --i.e., The List, i.e., now, The Jerry Site -- reflect a cancellation for JGMS. Thoughts?

Also, I believe that the Kingfish listings for 2/14-15/75 are new and should be added to the Kingfish lists.

TJS deletion: 7/5/71

slip added a listing for NRPS 7/5/71 at Fillmore West, based on this poster from Wolfgang's Vault. But the poster is clearly for the movie "Fillmore" and has been mis-interpreted and it has now been deleted.


I will be tagging this with "TJS-deletion." Since there's no other way to track what's been cut, I'll track them here in the hopes that TJS doesn't accidentally re-enter them.

Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales: June 7, 1970, Matrix, San Francisco, CA (PHANTOM)

The Jerry Site still doesn't have any way to keep a list of deleted shows. If one is deleted or its date is changed, the old entry evaporates. So I am trying to keep track of what disappears under this "TJS-deletion" tag.

Anyway, TJS has listed a Garcia/Wales show for Sunday, June 7, 1970, probably based on a listing in the Berkeley Barb contributed by Joey Newlander. Gordon Sharpless was also credited as an information contributor, though I don't know in what capacity. Here was the note for the show:

Billed as "Jerry Garcia, Howard Wales and Friends". Listing from newspaper advertisement. The Dead played this same date at the Fillmore West. Although it's a possibility both shows took place (this being in the afternoon), it's unlikely.

As Ross points out to me, Sunday shows almost never happen at the Matrix. Gary Jackson's list of Matrix dates has the club closed on June 7th. The GD were playing at Fillmore West, as noted above. Finally, there is good evidence, apparently including a recording in the Garcia vault, for a June 8, 1970 Garcia/Wales gig at Matrix, their usual Monday Night thing.

In brief: seems like there was no HWJG thing at the Matrix on June 7, 1970. I'd guess that the Barb had a typo or other misinformation.
