New listing as of 4/22/2012. Corry: "I have since been in touch with a fellow blogger who actually attended the show. More importantly, he recalls that Old And In The Way's performance was broadcast on the radio, and it was announced from the stage. I no longer recall whether it was the college radio station (KZSC) or the local community station (KUSP), but it does mean that there is a chance that someone made a tape. Poster from cryptdev's post gives "Jelly Roll Community Productions Presents Old & In the Way [subbed with personnel, Jerry Garcia up top over Vassar, Peter, David and John] and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Special Guest Bruce Frye". At bottom it says "A Jelly Roll Jamboree". Goldberg reports that fire marshal turned some ticket holders away. "This writer is getting a little bored with Jerry Garcia and his country rock groups ... it's jut not exciting music."

  1. Great list, thanks. Would the 3/6/87 JGB show aboard the USN ship count? It was "community service" so it would seem Jerry played for free...

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't think that was his community service gig, though that idea has been out there. In fact, in generating this list I began to think that 8/27/85 was his post-bust community service gig.

I think the 3/6/87 was just a free show, which is different from a benefit.

    1. Yes, you're right, probably not a benefit per se. Found this facebook page about it:
      https://www.facebook.com/93535462627/posts/10150838010887628/
The assertion that Jerry was friends with an officer and wanted to come aboard and "try out some new stuff" seems odd. Doesn't seem likely that Jerry would want to perform a daytime gig in a tin-can sounding space, and sandwiched between GD Kaiser and JGB Stone runs, unless he was somehow compelled to do it. Wasn't the community service commitment after the bust supposed to be for more than one show? Weird to think that Jerry played on the same ship where Bin Laden has his burial at sea...

A real benefit that happened shortly thereafter was Artist's Rights Today show on 3/18/87, first JGAB gig. That could be added to the list.

Also, not trying to stretch the "benefit" concept, but would the 5/5/82 Prison gig by JGJK count?

      Thanks again for the list!

    2. It was a gesture to the Mayor's office in an attempt to glean favor toward the GD's long time desire for a free gig in Golden Gate park.

  3. I guess I define "benefit" as generating money to give to someone else. Free gigs, per se, aren't benefits. I assume 3/6/87 was free for those onboard.

The 3/18/87 ART benefit should definitely be on the list, will try to code that in for the next iteration.

5/5/82, we just don't know enough about it, and in any case, per my definition above, I doubt it generated any revenue from attendees. Captive audience, so to speak.

    1. No revenue involved. There was DeadHead officer who took us all over the ship ( even sneaked us into the
"war room" )but it was the gesture as described above, to the City of SF.

  4. Here's some others to consider for this list:

01-23-1988. Blues for Salvador concert was a benefit for Nest Foundation

07-16-1988. US/USSR Peace Walk concert Golden Gate Park, although maybe no money was collected?

03-12-1988. Bammies ceremony was a benefit for "Rock & Roll Museum" (according to BGP).

03-02-1983. Bammies ceremony was a benefit for "Bay Area Music Archives" (according to BGP).

  5. Nice layout! And useful to have a full list of GD/Garcia benefits over the years. The Dead's withdrawal from benefits for much of the '70s is plain to see, though Garcia kept playing them.

How complete the list is, I guess more time & investigation will reveal. I was surprised to see a number of '60s shows omitted from the list that I thought were benefits....so perhaps it's sometimes debatable whether a show was a benefit or not.

One show I don't think was a benefit was the 8/4/71 prison show. Did anyone pay to see this show?

I also dispute 11/15/69 in Crockett. It was billed as a "Moratorium Day Gathering," but neither the poster nor Chronicle notice say that it's a benefit for anything, so I'm not sure why Deadbase called it one. (And Crockett was a tiny out-of-the-way town, an odd place to hold a benefit.)

I also have some doubt as to how 9/2/74 in Marx Meadows was a benefit, if it was a free show in the park.

A small correction - we've found that Garcia sat in with Traffic not on 3/18/68, but on 3/24/68, in a parking lot near KMPX.
And on 11/12/67: "no confirmation." Though other researchers into Winterland shows would know for sure, I suspect it's one of those phantom Deadbase listings.

By the way, a listing of the beneficiaries of the Rex Foundation over the years can be found here:
    http://www.rexfoundation.org/category/grantees/page/4/

Astonishingly, the Dead gave almost 3 million dollars in grants in their last two years, 1994-95.

  6. Jerry was paid for the Latin show at the Biltmore in LA.

  7. Oh yeah, I am sure Cinemax laid out some cash for the whole thing. Any idea how much? It's a *great* late Jerry performance.
