Last week some vintage Al Qaeda video emerged, of Osama Bin Laden allegedly planning the 9/11 attacks, meeting with known 9/11 terrorists, etc. All other things being equal, one would have to think that such video helps the Bush Administration and Republicans, insofar as it bolsters Bush's big push (also of last week) to reframe everything away from Iraq and back to 9/11 and the GWOT. I also recall that an AQ video emerged in the weeks prior to the 2004 presidential elections which, too, would seem to have played to Republican advantage.
I don't go in for conspiracy theories, but it got me to wondering whether something systematic might be happening here. Two hypotheses.
H1: The Bush Administration leaks these videos. The evidence against is the timing this time around: a little to early to be an effective October Surprise.
H2: Osama is a Republican and fan of GWB. Why would this be so? Perhaps he sees better than most Americans that physical death and destruction a la 9/11 are only an entree into the American body politic, a problem which, under certain leadership, lethally metastasizes into wholesale abandonment and destruction of our rights, liberties, constitution and rule of law. What better way to destroy America, ca. 9/11/2006, than to empower a lunatic fringe that is destroying us from the inside?
