I have been processing information from contracts filed at the
American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local No. 6 in San Francisco.
- San Francisco Sessions, 1967-1968
- San Francisco Sessions, 1969
- San Francisco Sessions, 1970
- San Francisco Sessions, 1971
- San Francisco Sessions, 1972
There is nothing representative about these – I have information
on stuff that is a degree or two from Garcia, and a few other random tidbits of
idiosyncratic interest to me.
A few points of note, for me.
- Danny Cox using the Saunders-Kahn-Vitt (and Garcia!) band in July
- 9/30/71 Garcia and Santana together on a contract
- More busy Jeffersons
- Rowan Brothers getting busy second half of ‘71
- Etc.

This is a fascinating list on so many levels. I count 27 John Kahn sessions. At $90 per 3-hour session (I believe the going rate at the time),that would equal $2430 (minus union dues, of course). That doesn't seem like a lot, but Kahn's rent probably wasn't more than $100 a month, if that. Throw in a couple of dozen gigs with Bloomfield and Garcia/Saunders, and he's definitely getting by.
ReplyDeleteIt's a useful suggestion to how important studio paydays were for the working musicians in San Francisco at the time.
And of course, for those interested in mystery trumpet players who may or may not have made guest appearances with Garcia and Saunders, it's a useful primer. John Wilmeth is there, as is Bill Atwood, and I note that Ken Balzall played more sessions than I realized.
ReplyDeleteAnd Luis Gasca, of course.
ReplyDeleteThe Jeffersons seemed to run the sessions for what became Sunfighter in November. Yet on 10/29/71 Dryden told a Cleveland journo that "he and Jerry Garcia have just finished doing some recording with Grace and Paul in California". I couldn't quite figure what he was referring to. Of course, Paul was pretty constantly at Heider's from 1970-1973 as far as I can tell, so it could have been any time. Here are some hypotheses.
ReplyDeleteH1: "Just finished" at the end of October could mean summer, e.g., while the Jeffersons were working on what would become Bark.
H2: pick any of the random Jeffersons sessions, including Papa John or whatever, around September, or a date that's not represented in paperwork.
H3: "just" is more proximal, and there are undocumented Sunfighter sessions before November. Garcia's schedule looks suspiciously open October 4-18 (just two gigs with Merl, no documented studio work).
I suspect H3 to be correct, but I really don't know.
I guess I will link to a relevant Twitter thread here, so as not to see the good discussion about likely rehearsals with Keith, etc., vanish in the short run.
